I asked this once before about my 2.4 but no one had a clue about it, so im asking once again but now its about my 3.4. for those "cool air" kits they just take all that out and put a straight tube so what would it hurt to replace the stock air duct and that box thing with just a straight forward simple tube but keep the stock air filter box and put a fitting in the tube for the vacuum line that used to connect to that box or canister thing?

what is that box on there for and what does it do?

why is there an extra hole there when they just put a p-trap looking plug to just cap it off?

just thinking I could clean up the look a good bit by just using a straight tube so can anyone comment or explain why or if this stuff is needed?

now im not thinking about using those cheap crappy plastic flex duct things that can collapse on you, im thinking straight length of pvc tubing and using the stock style flexible rubber boots to mount it like these: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Fernco-3...chanical-Flexible-Coupling-P1056-33/100372296

Yes, airraid sells the MIT "Modular intake tube" kit. It wont give you any hp on a stock engine but it will look cool.

Do the elbow removal mod and possibly the deckplate mod to the stock airbox. this will net you 5hp, and is free. See how to do the elbow mod here

yep, I already did the elbow mod, much better then the ugly ass deck plate contraption and im not looking for "cool" looking, I just want to declutter it some plus its a PITA to remove the duct they way it is now so a pipe with clamps would make it very easy to remove it anytime in the future.

im not silly enough to spend $150 on a duct kit that I can make myself with pvc tubing and flexible couplings for $15 but that's what I was looking to reproduce.

im mainly wanting to understand what that canister is there for and what it does? I like to know what im getting rid of before I get rid of it because if it serves some purpose then I can decide if I want to just keep it or not. I have never found anyone who can explain what that canister is for and if removing it has any side effects at all.

It is a sound baffle - it makes it quieter.

PVC tubing eh... i thought you weren't going for an ugly-ass contraption, lol. Good luck with that. Remember the PVC tubing necks down in size alot based on the external diameter, and the bends will likely create turbulence. Give it a shot.

You mean that weird /kinda square box ? If so I think it's a plenum for static pressure for air/fuel mixture/emissions, not 100% but the deck plate MOD is the only actual performance enhancer for the 3.4 I know of, like CAI's, they look cool but do little if anything, may actually decrease performance IIRC...

I was going to use a straight pipe with a 45 on each end to exactly match the oem tube but without the big can hanging off of it, it would be no more or less restrictive then stock.

yes that's the thing, I left my 2.4 stock because I just didn't know if it might change mpg or something so when in doubt leave it alone lol.

I forgot there is also a tube on the back side for the IAC which means it would be very difficult to duplicate that connection so i'll just leave it be but I may cut out about 2" in the middle of it somewhere to put a slip coupling like in the above link so it flexes more to make it easier to get it on and off. its just not a very sensible design to have to be forced to bend abnormally just to get it off and on.

Won't hurt a thing, use the same size piping. I ran the ISR mod on my 3.4 4runner for several years. The sound will be very slightly louder, but not as much as a DPM or a K&N filter.
