The 2016 Tacoma IS the Gen 3 Tacoma

I will put this up one more time. Bill Fay read his speech from a TelePrompTer. A speech that was most certainly looked over and given the right away from the tops at Toyota on something as a big of a deal as this Tacoma. Read his words. End of the current generation. Hence the beginning of a new generation. Pretty concrete evidence for most. And for those claiming this is just a sale pitch that only the sales department is in on head of engineering Mike Sweers has also called the new Tacoma the next gen. Those are the two main components to this truck and to say the tops at Toyota didn't give these two the consent to say what they did is delusional to say the least. Way to much on the line for Toyota here for that to happen. Like it or not guys this is the next gen Tacoma and the look we will have in a similar fashion for the next 7-10 years if history tells us anything.

 

I absolutely agree that is what Toyota wanted them to say.

Now we are getting somewhere Jeff. I am not saying that someone has to say the Gen 3 Tacoma is worthy of its name. That is for each individual to decide for themselves. What I am saying is Toyota is going with the idea that this is their new Gen 3 Tacoma. Just listen to their top minions and you should be able to figure that out.

It's a 3rd gen, no question about it. I see so many guys on here with 2012-2015 trucks saying they are 3rd gens because they changed the front clip. Oh please, if we played the game that way, I'd have a 3rd gen and the new truck would be like a 6th gen.

2005-2015 Tacomas is the 2TR-FE engine, everything else is new hat.

 

Wrong. Pictures show alot more shared, suspension components, mounting points, radiator support, radiator, steering wheel, composite bed, etc. etc. I think the argument is no doubt toyota calls it a 3rd gen from a sales point, fine its a 3rd gen, but when you look at internal documents others have shared that refer to it as an update not a redesign, rumored same chassis codes and the fact it shares ALOT of parts from the current gen where as the 1st and 2nd gens shared nothing, others feel its not a true new generation. No one is trying to argue what Toyota is calling it. They want to sell new trucks to all us with the "old gen".

 

I remember when the 5th generation. 4Runner came out. People didn't think it was a 5th gen because it had the same frame and engine.
The Tacoma has a upgraded frame same size and similar looks and people think it's gen 2.5. Typically Toyota uses the same frame for 2 Generations. It's a 3rd generation. Simple. Even Porsche uses updated frames and engines.

 

Toyota has always made evolutionary changes. It is called kaizen. You don't throw out everything you've learned from your previous generations when you do a redesign. There isn't a standard for what has to change to make it a new gen.

Toyota calls it a 3rd generation. It is the 3rd gen. End.

 

Guess they broke the "kaizen" rule when they went from 1st to 2nd gen. Those are two completely different generation/trucks with nothing carried over.

 

While I like the new Tacoma, I am not giving up my first gen for one lol. Maybe if I can afford to buy one in the future and keep both I might consider it though. But my first gen is here to stay for a very long time.

 

Can I simply add that I just don't care? It comes with 95% of the shit I want, rides high enough to allow me to see in traffic, and I won't have to disassemble my fishing gear. I am also sick of driving a 2004 Corolla that JUST WON'T DIE!!!

Does it matter if it's a true 3rd Gen or a built up 2nd? Not to me. I don't care.

I can't wait to have it.

Jesus Christ, everything isn't so literal. Their market research showed that the truck needed to be bigger, so it was impractical/impossible to carry over the frame or the body. This is why a new frame was developed. I guarantee you that they didn't throw away the design of the 1st gen and start from a clean sheet, though. They used what they knew from the first truck's design to develop the 2nd truck. The styling being so similar wasn't just something that organically happened. They knew the target market liked that general style of the 1st gen so they tried to apply it to the 2nd gen truck. Going to the 3rd gen, the truck didn't need to grow so they could carry over much more and spent their R&D money improving the low points on the 2nd gen (interior and drivetrain specifically). Kaizen isn't literally carrying parts from gen to gen. It is taking a system and continuously improving it over time. At some point, you get into diminishing returns by doing a clean sheet design.

So are we now in agreement that the 2016 Tacoma IS the Gen 3 Tacoma at least as far as Toyota is concerned. Which is what I meant by the title of this thread. Now see that wasn,t too bad. Was it?

 

Quite a few butthurts here because their beloved 2nd gen will soon become the neglected middle-child when the 3rd gen gets all the attention.

"It's not a real 3rd gen because a lot of blah blah blah got carried over from 2nd gen......look, my dick still fits inside this 3rd gen exhaust because it's the same 2nd gen exhaust"

Like, who the fuck cares? Exactly zero people gives a flying fuck about your opinion of how "un-3rd gen" this 3rd gen is.

It's very simple, let's follow the chart:

1) Will you buy the 3rd gen? If no, proceed to #2.

2) Do you like the 3rd gen? If no, proceed to #3.

3) Go back to 2nd gen forum where you belong.


Of course, anyone here has the rights to their opinions, but this gets very tiring. No one here's saying the 2nd gen will be inferior and obsolete all of a sudden the 3rd gen comes along. All these justifying to vilify the 3rd gen as a half-cooked 2nd gen to make yourself feel so much better about owning the 2nd gen is really fucking pathetic.

Healthy Gen 3 Tacoma discussions about pros and cons is always a good thing and well what the Internet is for. Right? But when the silly theories about Toyota not really considering this their next generation Tacoma so the REAL Gen 3 was just around the corner came out I just had to call fowl.
