Hi I have a 03 tacoma prerunner with the off road package I've heard that with the package you can just get some stock parts and convert the prerunner to a 4x4 does anybody have the list or have experience with this mod? Anything helps and is welcome

Pull the hood latch. Open the hood. Take off the radiator cap off. Walk over to a 2003 Toyota Tacoma 4x4 open the hood. Place your pre runner radiator cap on the 4x4 and there you have it. Pre runner to 4x4 mod completed. :mudding:

There are a lot who say it is too much work, or too expensive, but with a little patience and salvage yard searching, it can be done for relatively low cost considering. You will need a new transmission with transfer case, a new ECU, some electrical harness pieces, front differential with CV shafts and spindles. Those are the major components. I helped a guy do this with a manual transmission conversion (Which was a lot easier since there were not many wires to deal with) and I think his total cost, including my labor, was about $2k.

Thanks man! I'm gonna start searching and hopefully it won't take long to find all the parts I talked to a guy at 4 wheel parts and a SAS is 8700 with parts and labor and I just don't have that kinda cash right now

Do some searching on the forums here. There is an entire thread dedicated to SAS and TONS of information on parts and procedures.

Why would you need a new ecu? Thinking of doing this to mine

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Why do you want to go SAS? If your thinking of using stock parts, fyi no Tacoma ever came with a solid front axle from the factory.

Iirc the 03-04 will require a new transmission or taking yours apart and changing out the tails hater from on of the same year. Has something to do with the electronic throttle body. As for the rest of it I think it's a bolt in swap

The 2wd transmission output shaft is too short to engage the 4wd transfer case. You can use the 2wd tranny just have to break it all down and swap in a 4wd output shaft, then bolt the transfer case to it. You will also need a new rear drive shaft, front drive shaft, diff, cv's, 4wd hubs, spindles and new 4x4 ecu. Or do a manual conversion and 4wd.

Best swap ever, go over to TTORA for some good links and builds over others who have done it. Didn't cost me that much just took a while to find the deals, definitely was an easy mod as far as bolting everything up. Biggest thing is for the 01-04 you have to make sure the transmission is also from on 01-04 whereas for my model I used one from a 98 4runner. Manual everything is the easiest way to go but I put in an ADD and just locked the diff with a switch after putting it in
