Hmmm, interesting. Looks like I might give this a try over the weekend depending on how time consuming it is. I certainly feel as though my steering should be tighter.

the zip tie fix worked great, but the green bushing got pulled down alittle , zip tie was tight fitting, couple days later bushing fell all the way down, making it real loose and clucking when turning wheel,, dealer replaced upper intermediate shaft with new one,, NO PLAY AT ALL NOW,, are replacement parts better than original parts,, truck was new and had all that play, now with replacement part no play,, dont understand how this can happen,, are they using older parts to build new trucks,,

I believe there is a TSB out to fix this issue - They replace the intermediate shaft with an upgraded model. Also - per the info I linked to a couple posts ago from this thread - I believe the installation adjustment may play a role in the final correction. I had mine done (2012) in approx. 2013 and it helped much 99% but I'm always thinking to slide that shaft as instructed ion this thread to get it to 100%

i know there is a tsb out,, my point is, why does the new shaft have almost zero play, and the old one had alot of play.. truck is a 2015, with a few thousand miles on it.. hummm

What I was getting at - Although they did some kind of mod to the shaft - the actual use on new production I do not know. Also the factory / tech may not have adjusted it to the optimal setting.

I did this a few month ago and it definitely does help with tightening up the steering, but it seemed to tighten it too much on mine. All the minor road vibrations were coming straight into the steering wheel so i finally took it out two days ago and the drive is way better. Still get the occasional clunk and loose feeling on big bumps but ill take the smooth ride on normal roads

I noticed this clunking today driving off road over rocks. As usual, it's nice to come to TW and find an explanation, complete with photos and an option for a cheap fix!

    Lifted,
I cannot believe that all my steering issues are fixed with a zip tie!! WTF Toyota?? Kudos to the OP! You just eliminated the urge to trade my 2015 Tacoma in for a RAM. Thank you:cheers:

Thread revival, just did this fix. All I could fit was one black zip tie in there but what a difference! I wish I would have seen this 7 years ago. My biggest Bitch about this truck from day one was the loose feeling in the steering. The roads around me and in Tucson in general are some of the worst roads I've ever been on and from day one my taco's steering wheel would shake like crazy. This five minute fix just cured 75% or more of the problem. Thank you OP! I highly recommend this quick fix and Damn you Toyota for making me feel like this was normal.
