I'm 21 and just really starting to get my hands greasy.. so was hoping for some help here. My truck gets some pretty sucky gas mileage right now running 37s. And with my age I obviously want to go fast haha so why not get bad gas mileage with a mean motor? Yes I do know that going to smaller tires will help me out a bunch.. but I also want a badass ride.

But to what I'm really here for. I am looking into getting the URD cold air intake to start with, from research these guys are trustworthy and best work for toyota.
At the bottom it has a check box to add the MAF calibrator. I was wondering if I should just go ahead and purchase that as well... and what will that actually do once I start playing with it? (in simple terms)

Or should I start with regearing to 4.88s first before I start with tuning and beefing the motor up?

Not looking for smartass replies.. if you have something stupid to say, please don't even bother replying. Just looking for help and some smarts. Thanks in advance guys.

Gears may get you better mileage, just depends on your driving habits. More gear may help city mpg, but will hurt highway mpg. I have the CAI and the MAF Cali and like them both together. Nice little bump, but no mpg gain, or loss.

But,,, in your case, with 37s, I'd gear it first. If you do spend lots of highway time though, be careful as to how much gear you get.

No mpg gain, risk of maf fouling in rain, poor maf sensor seat may leak, urd does not work best for Toyota, gadget is NOT trustworthy when u have a problem with a product, get an afe stage 2 si intake.

I have had both of what u are asking about and hated them...........MAF calibrator was fun but its not easily adjusted or turned off if u have drastic elevation changes, a super hot day, long grades all of which have lead me to pinging.

intake, well I already summed that up. The URD intake sees ZERO cooler air than stock while cruising at 40 mph and above.

Okay this is what I'm looking for.. If you were to recommend anything else besides the afe stage 2 what would it be? I guess I can just scratch gas mileage out. Just want to gain some power back.
Any knowledge with programmers or what is your opinion on that?

Just fyi OP, I have had zero of the issues with my URD that Justus did. I will agree that there is only a few degrees difference between stock, aFe stage II SI and the URD (I've had the aFe and the URD also). I also had no issues, so did not have to deal with URD support, for good or bad. I had an aFe first, but did not like the sound when running around 1500rpm, annoyed me, so switched to the URD.

I did run some 1/4 times for both the URD and aFe, and the results were similar for both, about a 1/10 over OEM.

I still stick with my original recommendation though, if you are running 37s, gear it first, then hit up the perf mods.

Thanks guys for the help and the personal experiences on your purchases. Going to wait it out a little to see what I can come up with to really get the engine opened up.

Im going to vote for the gears first as well. If you do it right you can get similar performance to stock while still rolling like a boss on 37s. Then any performance mod you do will be far more effective and cause less strain on the engine.

Maybe your bypass valve stays somewhat in bypass. Happened to Memario with his brand newly installed S/C. Disconnected it and it was a boosting SOB

I liked my URD TCAI with maf cal. Had no issues, noticed a V tech sort of pull around 3500 rpm's. Haven't had any issues with it but run it with the shield and the aqua net. I would also go with regearing first. I don't think you'll notice a real difference with my setup on 37's.
