@Taco Nation - Just about any shock you see mention of on this site will be an improvement over the stock 4600's. Make sure you get something that is suited for standard length/travel. I'm not sure how OME shocks do without an accompanying lift. Can't go wrong with 5100's all around for a relatively cheap upgrade if no lift is desired. Asking what shock pairs well with air bags in your dad's case wasn't a bad question. Kudos on not starting a new thread for it though.

Thanks a lot man. I'm leaning toward recommending 5100's for him. I'm kind of biased to them so I wanted to check on here first.

If you just do rear shocks, there couldn't possibly be an easier job to tackle yourself in the driveway FYI. I don't know if you do mods yourself but that's an easy one.

I just installed maxtrac spindles, all pro leaf springs and rear 5100's my self this past weekend so I know how easy it is

Wait, what? You bought and installed all this by yourself? Maybe I missed something but what did you use for selection criteria, and why couldn't you apply this to your dad's truck? My earlier response may have been a little douchey from the cheap seats however I did not leave you hanging. If I knew of a video link or a brief article I would point you to it. If you are not willing to invest a little time into understanding how a suspension works, then my best advice for you would be to purchase preconfigured kits, or use a reliable Tacomaworld friendly vendor such as Wheeler's or Downsouth Motorports or Toytec lifts or etcetera. Glad I could help.

Yes I bought all of that and installed myself and have a good understanding of shocks for unloaded tacoma's however I don't know much about how different shocks handle added weight. My selection criteria was pretty much I bought allpro standards and 5100's were one of the few choices for the 3-4" lift I now have. That search was based on shock lengths. Now I'm looking for shocks to work with stock length but 500-1000 pounds and that info isn't as easy to get at.

@Taco Nation Don't even bother wasting your time justifying yourself to the idiots. You asked a question on an Internet forum. If people don't want to answer your question because they think it is a waste of their time giving you an answer, then they don't need to take the time to be pricks. Some people live for the back and forth shit on these forums and you won't win any argument with them. Wasting your breath. Good luck with the new shocks.

First thing to understand is that springs are for weight and shocks are for wheel control. Heavier tires and rims require larger diameter shocks. Street use is higher speed and smooth surface where the 5100s excel due to smaller ports and higher pressure than the stocks. If I were to run constantly loaded at 500-1000lbs I would pick a 2 inch like an OME or Fox in a stock length, less likely to blow a seal if I hit a pothole plus less load roll when turning.

So OME would be a good cheap choice for him with the weight he carries. Thanks a lot.

Some of us take the time to answer the question and a week or five later the same question shows up in a thread dedicated to a different topic. Repeat.

Actually, I can't find it either, which is really kind of aggravating. Now I'm wondering if it was on another forum.
Here are some threads that I stumbled across.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/exploded-shock-absorber.357223/#post-9647846

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/what-to-look-for-when-buying-shocks.95475/

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/king-vs-icon-vs-fox-racing-coilovers.203714/

The last is a really good thread, but seems twice as long as I remember it.

Searching for diameter brings up a ridiculous number of results, and if you search for 2 inch shocks there is a boatload of threads about lifts.

Searching is more difficult than it was a few years ago.

I'm thinking about getting these for my 2012 Baja. Anyone know if I'll run into any issues. I'm thinking I won't be just want to be sure.

If its anything like my 2011, all you have to do is cut off (or remove) the bumpstops and that's about the hardest part.

I much prefer how the f150 bump stops screw on and off. It made adding the bags and removing the bags easier for me. Hopefully in the future Toyota does a better system

Oh. I have never had a reason to remove the airbags, other than to add the daystar cradles. Please let me know why you would be doing this so I can better understand the value of this feature.

    To sell.

Removed on my taco n sold. Removed on my f150 and sold. Generally it doesn't add value and reduces your buyer pool. Had to buy stops and took more work on the taco. Just saying...

Has anyone put daystar cradles after first running just the bags? if so, did you notice any additional lift from the cradles? i'm currently running bilstein 5100 all around (2.5" in front) with just the airbags in the back without daystar cradles. the back end is super stiff and i have to set bags at about 40psi to keep her level. will adding the cradles add a bit more lift to the rear end, allowing me to deflate the bags a bit for a softer ride? thoughts/advice?
