Is the plastic lining inside the door necessary?

Mostly stock with a few minor mods.
I pulled the driver's side door apart today to take a look at the speakers and noticed there was water trapped in the lower most part of the clear poly lining that is glued to the door. I got a car wash two days ago and assume it has been in there since. I pulled the bottom edge away from the door and let the water out. I'm tempted to just remove the whole thing. Is there a good reason that stuff is there? Clearly it is a moisture trap. I'm just curious what its purpose is?

Its supposed to be a moisture barrier to keep your switches/door panel foam dry. I usually get rid of em when im installing door glasses as the butyl never sits right once its been pulled. You should be fine.

Yep....Tacoma's are designed with the "wet door technology". The plastic is there to keep the moisture (water) away from the stuff that is not suppose to get wet.

That being said, when I replaced my door speakers, I carefully removed the plastic and then "re-installed" it on new butyl sticky stuff I had lying around the shop. In case you are interested, whatever type of plastic they use for the barrier, it sticks really, really well to duct tape.

Just my opinion, not sure if the plastic helps or not. Any moisture in the door should eventually drip out or evaporate in hot weather.
