Due to lack of time and not being able to run around for parts I had to go to the dealer today for my first oil change in my new to me 2012 Tacoma Off Road. I bought the truck with 38,000 miles certified pre owned and it now has 43,000.

After the oil change the service rep says I need a EFI service because the atomization of the of fuel isn't efficient.

He also said I need a service to clean the throttle body.

I'm sure it's no coincidence either that each of these symtoms have a 1/2 page dedicated to them in the back of the pamphlet they hand out with oil changes. So my question is this B.S.. More importantly can I add sea foam or a fuel additive over time to clean these and also keep the engine maintained.

Well, you can probably clean the throttle body yourself. The only thing that would cost you is a can of throttle body cleaner, about $5?

I'm guessing that's under under the black cover where the air filter is?

THis is why I hate some dealers and service departments. EFI cleaning is a total money grab by these clowns. I wouldnt even waste my time with seafoam, your truck on has 43K, its a baby.

Just burn a few tanks of gas with a heavy foot, you'll be good to go. Clean the TB beforehand though and you're set.

I think I would use a different dealer or do my own service... They are just trying to up-sell you shit that isn't needed. You should have asked how he knew that the " atomization of the fuel wasn't efficient ". I would love to hear his answer.

That being said the fuel spray pattern can be tested and analysed, but it requires special equipment and the injectors have to be pulled out and ran to test. I do not think that they evaluated your injectors...

If you're concerned, pull the air hat and check the throttle body yourself. Look for carbon buildup and grime in the area before the butterfly. I call foul with less than 50k miles but shit happens.

The first thing I would recommend is checking to see if spark plugs were changed at 30K per the maintenance schedule... Bet they are factory plugs.

The fuels have detergents in them. I worked in automotive for 4 years (3 in parts, 1 in service). Fuel injection cleaning is not needed 99% of the time. Our mechanics never recommended it until the company offered to pay then 1.5 hours for the service (it took them 20 minutes, so they came out ahead). We sold it for $90...it cost less than $40 to do it in cost + labor.

Even our dealership mechanics flat out told customers it was a gimmick. Half our service advisors refused to even offer it, the other half only did because of the commission. In 1 year I think less than 5 people total had it done.

So, in summary, you don't need it.

On a side note, time constraints to purchase the parts? You must be a very busy person if you can't even swing by an auto zone/pepboys/kragen for 5 minutes :boink:

Like any other job It is the service writers job to make these suggestions I would say at least half or more hate doing it .

But keeping the wife happy and kids feed over comes misgivings .

Maybe they figure if your going to the dealer for oil changes you need service suggestions .

Be nice to know just what a EFI service includes ?? ECM tune up ?? Injector polish ?? fuel filter inspection ??

Did they also offer a 30K power steering fluid flush.....another one of their over-sell tactics.

I went to the dealer today and requested a full service history of the truck. The truck was originally leased by them and I bought it after the original owner traded it in with 38,000. As the document printed the service tech mentioned that the plugs were not changed at 30,000. I questioned this but he said it was the owners responsility not the dealerships. The service manager had the day off today, but my salesman was in and agreed that the dealership should have changed them before they resold the truck.

I bought my 09 Tacoma at 91k miles. Original plugs. I had a carfax that showed a lot of dealer maintenance too.

bullshit is right. just trying to charge you for nothing, had my 2001 for 13 yrs, all i did was change oil, and basic stuff, last time at dealer with my pro for oil change, while i was waiting, the service tech's ,,, i guess thats what they are called, told 3 or 4 customers they needs this or that , and im thinking dont fall for it,, simple stuff, change air filter for one customer he said like 80 bucks,,, another one needed cabin filter changer 95.00 bucks,, these poor people.. 65.00 bucks t oplau a tire with a small hole in it.. and when the guy walks away they complain to each other about the cost,,,, dont go to a dealer for basic stuff, go to your local guy, simple stuff, and a simple price......
