I have the exact car, has 89k miles. Right now it is at the dealer getting the motor rebuilt under warranty. 2006-2010 is250's and gs's have defective piston rings. Lexus is standing by their products, when they found out about the problem they issued 9 year unlimited mileage warranties to all effected cars, I've been in a new rx450 loaner for a week so far. When combined with other known issues with the direct injection motors it's a clusterfuck.
The symptoms are a rough idle, misfire and oil consumption. I went in to have a recall fixed, told them about my oil consumption and rough idle, found out the next day they are rebuilding my motor or getting me a rebuilt motor. I was going through about 3 quarts of oil between 5000 mile interval oil changes. I didn't know about the issues when I bought it, but was shocked when the dealer told me they are taking care of it. (I didn't buy it from a Lexus dealer)
the awd is badass, I drove 40 miles to work with about 8 inches of snow on the road and didn't have a problem.
The car hasn't been any other problems.
when I get it back with the rebuilt motor I'll post a detailed thread of what all happened.

To me, it would depend on the reason. I purchased a car years ago with a branded title. The car had been stolen and recovered after the insurance had paid it as a total loss. They found it with the radio gone and nothing else. It went to auction and was "rebuilt" with another headunit. Had it for years without a problem.

If it was a wreck, find a different car.

Why are you trying to force an FJ on your sister when it seems she is looking for something much more comfortable, quiet and better on gas? Was the FJ her idea? I have not been impressed with them for DD, sight lines aren't great, ride wasn't very comfortable and NVH could be better. If she found that Lexus I can't imagine her being happy with an FJ. Take a look at an RX, MDX or other mid size SUV's. Unless the FJ is a weekend off road warrior there are much better options, maybe with not as much flair though but more tech, safety and usefulness.

How about some more info. Price range? Wants/needs, what she is looking at currently, ect.

haha good point man. She did like the FJs, they were just too expensive. I wasn't really trying to force it on her, I just wanted her to get one because I think they are badass :D She really isn't into cars so she was pretty open to whatever as long as it was awd or 4x4, "cute" and in her price range. Ended up getting a good deal on a 2006 Lexus IS 250 with 78K miles. It has some badass rims on it too. I'll post a pic or two when I get some.

    Thanks for the input everyone.

Good deal. Check on that recall for her and help her monitor those issues.

The wife has a RX350, drives the wheels off of it :). We keep up with the scheduled maintenance, 5,000 mi Mobil 1 oil changes. She will never own anything else. Best part, it looks good and no car payments. The branded thing .....That deserves a lot of research.

I might be a little too late but check out Lexus IS oil consumption. My wife had a Lexus IS250. It was a battle with the dealership and Lexus Customer support (or lack of in most cases). In and out of dealer constantly for evaluation. Other what I just mentioned and a huge smoke cloud on the interstate while accelerating hard it was a great car. Most lexus owners dont even know about it but direct injection only cars are notorious for carbon build. Glad to see Toyota reacted quickly and is doing a combination of DI and PI on their new motors.

i made a appointment for an oil change at the dealer to have the oil consumption test done. the dealer has to do the oil change, they mark it then you come back after 1000 miles and they check it (here is where people are getting screwed) my friend has a scion that burns more oil than gas, he had the consumption test done and they told him it was "within spec". i didnt even have to go through all that, the tech heard it idle when i dropped it off and 20 minutes later i find out im getting a rebuild. i guess its up to the dealers to fix it right and not dick around. it had a loud idle due to the di issue, the tech said it also had a slight misfire (i couldnt feel it and i didnt get a CEL)
as for the di the heads are getting cleaned and ill be good for another 80k miles i guess...if i still have it at 160k miles ill just pay to have the heads cleaned again
if you buy a used one a carfax should show the new upgraded piston rings were installed.

One more thing ..... We don't use the local "Stealership" for ANYTHING, we are lucky enough to have an independent Lexus/Toyota shop near by. Owned and operated by 4 Lexus Master Mechanics, great guys and quality reasonable work.

They are enkei wheels, not sure which model exactly. Pretty sharp though.

I will look into the oil consumption, thanks everyone.

I had a friend that was told the car he bought was a theft with only the seats taken.... As it turned out the car was hit in the rear HARD. Basically was rebuilt by cutting it in half. He lost his ass on that one.

IS300 as my DD, its been great. Gas and go for the most part. Likes to eat tires.....or may just be my driving :D. 157,xxx miles, 25mpg, same oil filter as the tacoma, alot of the same parts, most parts are ordered through Toyota instead of the Lexus dealer. Been/ still is a great car.
