So I have an 08 2WD Prerunner Offroad and the throwout bearing is squealing. Figure with 60K miles on the truck I will need to do the clutch too....went to my dealer.....8 hours of labor at $137 an hour plus $625 in parts almost $2G for a fukkin clutch?

Can anyone recommend a good shop in Southern California LA County or Ventura County?

I like factory service but I'm having a REAL hard time swallowing the dealer price....for that kind of money someone else should be swallowing something and it ain't me!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance for any replies\advice.

    Peace, T6x6

Wow, that labor rate of $137 per hour is pretty high I would think, but the labor rates do vary a lot depending on location. I would think you could get online and buy your own clutch kit and new flywheel for less than $400 and take it to a local transmission shop to swap out the parts.

Get an Exedy clutch kit off Amazon or from your local parts store and bust that thing out in a Saturday afternoon. These are cake to do a clutch swap on. Basic hand tools and a decent floor jack with some blocks of wood are all you need.

    sounds about right.

make sure to get the URD throwout fix... so you dont have to deal with it again..... or get an auto and never have to deal with it in the first place :D

Two words. Southern California. Western Washington State shop labor at allot of places is over $100/hr. around here so not too surprised.

IF your clutch is still good I wouldnt do anything to it. My TO bearing started squealing at around 40k. Its still squealing now at 240k and hasnt changed or gotten worse. Clutch still holds fine and no problems. My previous taco made TO bearing noise its entire life till it was bought back by Toyota at 180k.

    Too few to list.
Don't know where you are exactly but this shop did my timing belt/water pump with very reasonable rates and use OEM parts. http://www.yelp.com/biz/pro-auto-la-habra

If you have the time and a place to do it it isn't all that hard. Just found a kit for $124.00 by googling.

If the clutch isn't slipping, I wouldn't touch it.

Funny you brought this thread back from the dead. My clutch just went out on monday. Never slipped but the springs on the disk let go and I couldnt move the truck at all. 287k mi. Took about 5.5hrs and $350 for the clutch, pressure plate and TO bearing. The clutch pad still had lots of life left in it and the flywheel was perfect. The only really hard part was getting to the top bolts on the bell housing. The book lists it as a 5.5hr job for a 4x4 so dont get screwed paying for more hrs.

Toyota assembled a team of engineers to produce a clutch that squeals, sometimes getting worse as it ages, without actually causing any mechanical problem. I have to assume that anyway, since manufacturers have been building quiet clutches since 1895. Mine is at 160K, still squealing.
