    Howdy Howdy,
Hey I just had the timing belt changed on my 2001 Tacoma at 160,000 mi. along with the water pump belts etc., I have driven the truck less than 100 miles since then and now the ac compressor clutch is seizing when turned on, it will run but seizes after a bit. So anyway I am wondering if it's possible that they got the belt to tight or is 160 g about when the clutch goes out. The wife was just bragging about how good my AC was when it stopped, Clue???

you need to see if its the clutch or the a/c compressor itself, take the belt off and connect power to the clutch to engage it (because otherwise you cant make it engage without the truck running) then see how hard the compressor is to turn, it should turn very easy signaling its most likely just the clutch is bad but if it gets tight and the clutch starts to slip then the compressor is bad

Thanks for the reply keakar, I ended up taking my truck back to the mechanic that did the work for me, I told him what was happening and questioned him about the belt being to tight on the ac compressor, he said that it wasn't likely. Well I got a call back and he left me a message saying that the belts had to be fine tuned because new belts will stretch. ? Okay, never heard of that.. Anyway he said there was no charge because the belts were part of the original job. Well every thing seems to be alright now, I'm just puzzled with his explanation and wonder if I was right and the belt was to tight. Thanks again, kcinor

I bet it was just the opposite, he didn't tighten it enough or they had grease on the pulley making it slip.

at least its good to know its all ok.

and as an FYI my taco had a belt that was tight and still looked new on the back side but the pulley side the little grooves were worn round and it was slipping and chirping and sometimes squealed like you described, new belt fixed it right up so never just go by looks or tightness of a belt, these damn multi grooved belts only pull from the grooves so that's all that wears on them. if the belt rides on the ridges and not "in" the grooves it will slip.
