Just googled where this is. Looks nice!

Do you prefer certain areas in Nevada over SE Oregon?

Eventually we'd like to start exploring remote areas of Nevada & Idaho more, not sure where to start. So much cool stuff in both states to explore!!

Have you ever heard of Silver City in Idaho? A little ghost mining town in a remote SW area of Idaho, almost due east of Jordan Valley. Looks like it would be a lot of fun making the journey over there on some back roads!!

The guy in this link puts together books on the Owyhee area, and the "Owyhee Canyonlands" coffee table book has some incredible photos of the area. Lots of them are from creeks/canyons in that area that Silver City is in. Looks nearly impossible to get into that area by car, so I'm not even sure how he got the shots he did except by hiking or boating. I check that book out from the library every spring and drool over the photos all summer while planning trips over there, good inspiration!! If I remember correctly, he's got a jaw dropper shots of the Chalk Basin area in there too. You should check it out:

Yikes! Pretty sure this is where you'd hike from to get down to Chalk Basin. Knowing things always look easier in pics, I'm guessing this hike is pretty challenging........

Nice!! Never realized before, but pretty sure this road is accessed from Rome, heading north on it along the east side of the Owyhee, because I know there's some Birch farm or something over there. This is BEAUTIFUL!! Must see.

Last one, I promise. For now anyway. :D

Definitely want to make it here someday, but pretty sure this is one of those 'no road access, get off your ass and hoof it for a WHILE' spots. So pretty though.

And now, time to get off the computer and get down to work on that topper project!!

Planning to pressure wash the inside today, and finish up a few stubborn spots that still have black paint.

Thinking I will go for doing this right, so next step would be to VERY LIGHTLY sand with VERY FINE grit, at least 400 or more, then apply some glossy black paint (will review advice given about using Rustoleum - @koditten , didn't you say to try this?). Then a clear coat. Then maybe some obnoxious decals :D

I've given no advice on painting the cap, besides just doing it.

You are on the right page for sanding: Get it as smooth as you can with 600. Some guys like 400, but you can see the scratches if you get up close.

I'm betting whoever painted the cap before used 800 or 1000 to fine sand the cap. This is why the paint peeled right up with the pressure washer. There wasn't enough of a rough surface for the paint to flow into and stick properly. The pro's call this "tooth"

After that you can spray it with a base coat-clear coat paint system. You can find auto paint stores pretty much anywhere. Give them the paint code for your truck and they will custom mix the paint to match your truck.

After spraying 2 coats of base coat, let it dry then spray a coat of clear coat. Both types of paints require a mixing procedure-the auto paint store will give you a printout of the proper mixing procedure.

You are going to need some extra thinners (reducers) to properly mix the materials. You will also need a paint gun that has 2 different tip sizes. The clear requires a bigger tip because you need to spray that on thick. The clear coat is what gives people trouble with runs. Hence its great to do 1 side at a time with the side you are spraying tipped up when shooting the clear.

I can't stress the sanding part. You can't tell if its ready by looking at it. You have to feel the surface with your hand with no gloves on. I have a friend who does all his sanding with most of the lights off so he has to rely on the sense of feel. I'm not that picky. I expect to abuse the shit out of my vehicles. If it looks good at 50 feet away, that's just fine with me.

Just tell the guy/gal that runs the paint counter what you want to do. They are very knowledgeable and want to help.

Eric painted it black ~10 yrs ago when we 1st got it, and he didn't sand it at all. He just got some cheap black spray paint and went for it. Hopefully he at least washed it first? :D I'm surprised it looked as decent as it did for as long as it did. Really wasn't til the last 3ish yrs that it started chipping/peeling enough to actually notice it. Which is why it's tempting to do a less than perfect job again, to avoid PITA steps........still deciding.....

At first I thought the clear coat was still on there, but it's not. Looked closer with neighbor this morning, and it got blasted away with the black paint by the pressure washer. Oh well.

Thanks for the tips K! I think I'm going to need them : )

Nice to hear the trip went well. I am glad you have a truck fixed and you didn't give up! I know several times you had the towel in your hand and was ready to throw it.

You are sooooooooooooo right about that Bama!! You have seen the good, bad, and ugly from day one of this thread buddy!! :) Thanks for supporting us all the way through it all!! :) You encouraged me to keep fighting and reminded me that a 1st gen Taco is worth the battle more than once, and I'm glad you (and many others too!) pushed me to keep trying - look at what a happy ending we wound up with?!?!?

    Unblankingbelievable. :D

Finally found one of those dealer techs that you always said were out there!! Of course we kicked ourselves for not ordering one of the reman's that you suggested very early on, maybe even your 1st post, after we realized what those other clowns had done to our beloved Taco! You gave us some very solid advice, throughout

Nice to be able to now talk about some fun/happy stuff with you guys finally, after doing this :sadviolin: to all of you for so long every day!!! :)

How are you doing? What's new with you and your Taco lately? How's your granddaughter doing now?

I use that USGS site all the time. Usually for scribble sheets and back ups to the GPS.
A cool feature is the availability of quads done at different survey dates. Sometimes there is a significant amount of stuff, trails, mine sites, ghost towns, and Native American sites (cliff dwellings) shown on the older dates vs the later dates. Shhhhh!
