Not ALL of the DCSBs are made in Mexico. You just need to know what to look for :D

Yup, the one on NY auto show had the same looking saggy ass leaf pack as originally my 2 gen had from factory. So I would not expect more payload.
When I went to my dealer to complain about sag they told me that my ARE cap is over the payload. Finally I got from them upgrade which promptly sagged too. When they do my frame I am going with upgrade, pretty tired riding bumps tops just because I have shovel on the back.

Every frame has a natural frequency. Design an artificial surface to coincide with this frequency, and you can do this with any truck, and that's exactly what Ford did to make their own truck look better than the Tundra. Meanwhile, the Tundra performs better on real off-road surfaces than the F-150.

They fully box the Hilux frame because the current Hilux frame is a derivative of the previous gen's, whereas the 2nd gen Taco's frame was designed by Hino from scratch.

Because 2.5X the truck's weight (5.2 tons!) is enough. And thicker pillars hurt visibility, making you more likely to get into an accident. 2nd gen Taco's visibility is already poorer than 1st gen's. The Frontier's visibility is poorer than the 2nd gen Taco's.

Really? 2.5X is enough? Then why does the IIHS require a 4X for a good rating? Why is the new Federal Standard 3X (see link:
    https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/571.216a ) The Tundra manages 4X.

Here is the actual data that will clearly show that 2.5X is NOT enough.
    http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/811365.pdf

Also, why did Toyota make it stronger for the 3rd Gen if 2.5X was enough? (by the way - 2nd gen is actually closer to 3X - but still gets a "marginal" rating.)

Stronger roof crush standards don't mean bigger pillars - they mean STRONGER pillars. Higher strength steels. You might learn a little if you take the time to watch the recording of the Livestream Q&A that was held after the Detroit intro.

2.5x is enough but know they are making it better.

No doubt - for those who are satisfied with "marginal" safety (the 2nd lowest rating) - then 2.5X is just enough.

    No way, sig on man!

You have to be able to tell the difference between a "3" or a "5" when you look through the trucks windshield at the VIN.

So which number means what. First number 3 or 5? Last? Fill me in and tell me if you have heard a Texas build is actually better than the Mexico build. More info please.

VIN starting with a 3 means Mejico built. VIN starting with 5 is USA built. From what iv'e heard its all the same stuff and equals the same truck. From my past experiences with Hondas though, my identical Mexican built Accord was worse compared to my Japan built one. Shoddy workmanship and noticeably worse materials used even though it was the same 4 cylinder and trim level. But that's an early 2000's Honda.

This might not go over that well but I actually wish the Tacoma was built in Japan. They have some of the best quality on the planet.IMO. I am a big time fisherman and my Japan built reels have always been the highest quality even over USA built ones I've owned. I know fishing reels aren,t vehicles but the Japanese take great pride in there quality and work ethic.

There's a reason EVERY single USDM 4runner ever built was built in Japan. SC300, 400, 430, LS430, Landcruiser, LS460 still HAND PAINTED I believe, GX470, LX470, LX570, Supra, etc. All Japan built and only Japan built. They save their plant space for the quality vehicles. That's why the junky Yaris production was moved to France of all places. France!

Totally agree. Kinda wish they put the Tacoma on the 4Runner chassis. Since we really don't use the Tacoma as truck here in the States...linked coil rear suspension would be nice. Correct me if I am wrong, IIRC the 4Runner has better payload than the Tacoma, towing is about the same.

Speaking of the difference in cultures...look at when we have a natural disaster, people here loose bowel control and riot...tsunami nuclear meltdown in Japan...people were orderly and patient.
