As mentioned, mount the rails outboard of the honeycomb (thicker) section- you can actually push on the roof and tell where it's strongest and will support the most load. Measure twice, tape with blue painters tape, measure again then drill pilot holes before you drill holes as close to teh diameter of the bolts as possible (the kit for shells will tell you the drill bit diameter to buy). There is no need to gob silicon in the holes, a smaller amount works fine as long as you get good coverage- proper prep is key and actually silicon is not your best choice, a weather tight adhesive sealant for marine applications is a better choice (example: 3M 5200).

If you go with Yakima racks you can get them with nutserts or that come with nuts (Yakima part #8810155 is the kit for the 60" rails); the nuts will have a plastic/nylon surround that allows you to hand tighten them and acts kinda like fender washers. You do not want to crank down on the nuts through the fiberglass or you'll get cracking.

There will be some curvature of the shell but the rails should follow it with no problems. If the standard sized rails aren't exactly what you want length-wise just buy the longer rails and cut them to size- they utilize end caps so it's no big deal to cut the rails. Same with the bars; I prefer the longer ones as I occasionally carry several boats and it's easier to mount thing like awnings and rod holders on the underside thus not cutting into your top carrying space but you can easily cut the longer ones to whatever length you want.

My Yakimas have been on for going on nine years now and (knock on wood) still haven't leaked despite me putting more weight that is recommended on it on occasion. If you're going to load kayaks or especially canoes, use a front tag line to help keep the front from catching air and lifting against the rails.

My Snugtop Rebel arrived and was going to be installed today but the wrong length was ordered (LB instead of SB) and now it's a waiting game, again :(. Was so excited....the one that was at the dealer looked so nice.

Just a few expensive & DIY things...
Scored me an A.R.E Overland series topper off CL and sold my bed rack.
Two tool boxes and windoors, even threw in a carpeted platform to split the bed in half for access.

Besides another long wait....nothing yet. The dealer said they would give me some sort of discount once the proper one arrived.

Here are some pictures of my issues. Am I being too picky? Is this normal? That is what the A.R.E. dealer is telling me.

In my opinion, no way is that right. I have a LEER with no issues like that. I think that A.R.E. dealer is trying to get out of ordering you a new cap.

That looks like shit. I'm pretty unimpressed with ARE's quality control. There's a few issues on my shell that I'm driving back to the dealer on the weekend to see what they say. One of my windoors binds on itself and it's rubbing and chipping paint. The weatherstripping around my windoors is also cut short or overlapping in multiple places.

I'll post some pics later tonight.

They went cave man and over tighten the screws. Took my window off before to install the interior carpet.

    Wow. Over torqued.
I have a few small "issues" on my new A.R.E. that I was just going to let slide.
Have thought about questioning it seeing that it was $2K for it.
    I don't know....

I have a Leer as well with no issues. My pop has a Are Z series, bought second hand, on his F150 that doesnt look anything close to that. I'd demand a new shell or at least new molding if it can be saved.

My friend's Tundra has an ARE and it has issues as well. I've owned 4 caps and they have all been Leer for these reasons. I know in some areas that there are only certain vendors but that's unacceptable.

I have to do this on the SnugTop I just picked up.

Do any of you know how much the pet screens cost to pick up separately? And how they're installed?

You can get a thicker screen at any local screen shop, its a little harder to put on then normal screen due to its lack of give. It is installed the same way, with screen spline and patients...
