Now that I think about it and see how you guys roll in the Tacoma, a rolled on Rustolium paint job may be the way to go.

You can get a very smooth coating if you have the correct roller. It won't be mirror shiny, but it will be durable and easy to apply.

From what I can tell, you guys are never more than 2 days away from a dirt road. A deep, shiny paint job won't be noticed after the first mile.

They sell decent STAINLESS STEEL center caps for not that much money...

I like them since they often keep the rim from rusting to the hubs.

You can swing by your local tire store and they can measure and order what you need.

Plus there are numerous low price options out there. Those are NOT worth cleaning.

Hmm, Krud Kutter.....this could be fun.........I'm kinda weird like that, love making crappy stuff look new again with the right tools/supplies, very satisfying....might try this, thanks!

When we had Schwab switch us from Bighorns back to BFGs in January, they tried to talk me into buying new wheel center caps, and said it'd be $60. The tech said he COULD put the old ones back on, but that they would likely be impossible to remove normally by our next tire switch this winter. So they might have to be cut off :D I said whatever, put them back on anyway, I'm not spending $60 on that right now. That was right after I paid $6K for a new engine and realized the Taco was returned to me with a problem starting and the person responsible for it was not really into doing the right thing, good times :D

TW , some people said just toss the wheel center caps and go without. But don't those have to be on the wheels, to protect the brakes from getting dust in them?

Anyone ever ordered off TRD Parts 4U website? Eric's looking around on it, and found some nice looking TRD caps for ~9 each, you guys think these would work for us? Wonder if this site is legit........

They do nothing but add another thing to clean. wont hurt the wheel/hubs to be without them.

I like this advice. Going to check Depot for rustoleum options/prices today and also stop by the auto paint/detail place nearby and just blab with them for a bit to see if I pick up any tips/ideas.

DUDE!!! Neighbor just said he will remove the wheel caps today and has some kind of sand blaster thing that he said will remove the rust!!! Sweet!!

For @knuckleduster271 and any other Waylon fans, just discovered yet another "new to me" Waylon song that completely ROCKS on the way home from taking Dolly to the park!! Sad but beautiful.

Heading up to auto paint place to ask some questions about the topper and the truck, then time to pressure wash neighbor's stone wall. It's covered in mossy moldy mildewy Pacific Northwest funk, and it's about waist height and all of at least 1/2 block long. So, I should be covered in funky crap head to toe within a couple hours easily, good times!

Then back to messing around with the Taco this afternoon. Hoping whatever my other neighbor is talking about with that sand blaster thing works, that'd be sweet! And I'm going for it with the topper today if all this other crap doesn't take too long. :)

    And........

That was completely worthless. The lady at the auto paint store basically laughed at me when I told her what I was trying to do and with what tools and supplies. Whatevs. Heading to Depot later to check out the rustoleum, screw her. I will get this done on the cheap. And it will look good damnit.

Time to pressure wash neighbor's wall. This is what I will look like after:

Blue Bucket Mine? Yep, not much left there. It took us almost 2 hours to fill a bucket with nuggets.;)

Salmon River Wilderness is very scenic. Both traveling east up river from Riggins and west down river from North Fork.
The Best Western "Salmon Rapids Lodge" in Riggins is spectacular. Worth it to just go in and check out the huge picture window in the lobby overlooking the river.
From North Fork you can drive 40 miles into the wilderness on well maintained dirt to the main rafting jump off point and a USFS campground. We found it nearly deserted on a Labor Day weekend. It had some of the best "drive up" fishing I have ever seen, the kind of thing where you heat up the skillet before starting to fish. A spur trail along Panther Creek leads further into nowhere and some hot springs along with equally good fishing.
Plenty of good pics in Google Earth.

Hells Canyon? Yep we took the jet boat ride, very cool. At the ranch the Skipper said "While you folks look around, I'll see if I can hook a Sturgeon" and he did, rough life.

That USGS site is most definitely confusing until you get the hang of it. I usually print the 7.5 min quads on 8.5 x 11 stock and have been known to bump up the magnification and splice 2 "landscape" halves together. The single sheet versions are plenty easy to read but sometimes a little bit bigger is good.
    USGS7.5_zpsysltpqu6_615b607cd39e52d21ce8430a89e61a165d92991c.jpg

I just checked a favorite spot in SE Utah, the 1962 7.5 min quad showed at least 15 cliff dwelling sites while the 2014 showed none.

That exact BW has been on our must stay list for some time now. Never explored the Idaho side of HC, only the Oregon side - and boy is it absolutely spectacular!! Minds were all made up that we were moving to Halfway, no matter what. Then we discovered SE Oregon, and Leslie/Succor areas. And suddenly Boise seemed a good compromise, because ALL that stuff would be closer, and it could actually be a realistic move - thinking there are more job opp's in Boise than Halfway/HC area!! : ) Plus, we'd be that much closer to you, so you'll have less excuses to meet us halfway somewhere....

That jet boat tour is one of the coolest things I've ever done. Could look at that scenery forever and not get bored. We always fight for the very back seats, so we get soaked - it's always so burning HOT down in there!! And seeing those old houses, and farm equipment.......it was incredible to think about how those people lived down in that canyon with so few resources/modern conveniences. Talk about a tough life!!! But yeah, that boat captain guy has a life of GOLD!

Did you go up to Cornucopia? We've gone horseback riding a few times at the lodge up there, and wow, that's pretty incredible too. Such tame, gentle horses - thank goodness, because I'd never ridden a horse until I went there 3 yrs ago!! We did the Norway Basin loop 2 summers ago, and I have never seen anything so beautiful in my life. Also, my butt never hurt so much in my life. That was one long, dusty, rocky trail.

I'm lucky, I'm all set up in the map printing dept - Eric manages a blueprinting shop! Comes in handy for sure!

I like your tip about the older maps showing things the newer ones don't!! Would have never thought of that, and probably never would have bothered looking at the old ones. Thanks DP!

Is there a simple cheap way to deal with these little spots? I think we must be getting them from rocks hitting on rough roads or something. Didn't care much before, but I don't like seeing them multiply and get bigger, the hood seems kinda necessary. Ideas?

Easiest? Touch up paint pen. Best? Repaint is the most durable.

Here's all I got done today on the topper, but hey, it's a step. See if you can even tell what it was:

PS: this was a good practice item, the two blacks looked identical, but clearly they weren't - should have taped off to do ALL of the black trim instead of only the bad looking portion........

Decals are coming along nicely I think, Toyota colors, that will match the Taco and even the topper if I decide to leave it red....and Eric thinks he can clean up the little taco dude graphic to look sharper... :)

It doesn't look to bad after a good scrubbin. Red and black! If you do decide to shoot some black. John Deere Blitz Black will run you about $26 a gallon at the JD store. A enamel etch singe shot air dry paint that would low-gloss black the topper again after a good scuffing/cleaning. It will stick. They have rattle cans of the same stuff,,at the same store. Change direction as you spray that first light coat,,up, down,, across,,shake the can,, repeat. It would take a few cans to get everything even. It would have to be thinned with there JD thinner to be shot thru a gun, and in the end,,its the best way to do it for quick even easy coats, But there is a "price of admission" when playing with paint guns.

They have a JD Buff Primer before there Black goes on,,but you don't need that for a topper skin.

    Get a scratch??,,have a spare can handy..let it rip!

Thanks for the ideas Mod!! Still thinking it all over. I think my neighbor convinced me to try putting the red topper on for a few days and driving it to see if we wind up liking it and wanting to keep it or paint black. Leaning towards black pretty heavily, but figure no harm in giving it a few days to be sure first. I'm pretty well sold on doing a roller, whether it's wise or not. I think personally I'd have more control of doing an even job than with a spray can. And I could probably track down a sprayer if I really really tried but I think it's just not worth a ton of effort to me!! :D

Hey, guess what TW! I found a 10 yr old pic of the Taco sporting the red topper!! Had to include the super cute pic of dogs helping with camp dishes on same trip. :)

Eric doesn't normally dress like that, he just enjoys being ridiculous when it comes to stocking firewood I guess? :D

Yeah, that topper needs to be black.

I'm first in line when it comes to re using toppers, and believe me, looks are not the most important. My cap on the Tundra originally came off a Chevy 1500 truck (gasp!). The fit between the cab and the cap is off, but like I said, the cap needs to function. The looks come second. After I test fit the cap and it worked fine, then I proceeded to paint match the cap to the truck. I only paid $125 for the thing and I was in a hurry because the wife and I were taking a trip to S. Carolina. I needed something to keep our shit dry while on the road. since I take it on and off so much, spending the long dollar for the truck specific cap made no sense to me.

You need to make the cap match the truck. A gallon of oil based Rustolium is only $22. $5 for some foam rollers.

I don't know how much a big, white, TacomaWorld.com logo on the top would cost.
