Thanks bass mechanic. I had pretty much everything else figured out except for the heating and forming part. Also good point on the fabric, I had not thought of that but will definitely pay attention to it. I got some nice grey upholstery fabric that is just a little darker than the interior. I was trying to find more of a charcoal colour but I think this will probably blend in even better which is my goal.

After putting your info to use earlier, I heated up the piece I was working on last night and got as close to perfectly shaped as I think it will ever be and now I am doing some final trimming on the size and shape. Once done, I will be able to use that one as a pattern to make the second one and then home free from there. Will post some pics as soon as I get them done.

Both you guys did great work. So I got some materials to try to make some similar speaker grills. I am gonna play around with this a bit the next couple of weeks but won't have time to finish or actually install speakers for awhile since I am having shoulder surgery in a week and a half. So I'll be out of modding action until winter or early spring. :-(

How did you guys trim the ABS... freehand with shears or did you make a template somehow and score it with a razor knife? I suppose a dremel with a little stone could be used to make minor adjustments.

Myself, I used a jig saw to cut out the shape a little bigger than the finished piece and then used a wood rasp to remove the extra material to get it down near the finish. Then just a regular file. I tried a dremel tool but the ABS tends to melt somewhat. If you notice there is a small difference between mine and bass mechanics's grills. His actually cover over the v groove in the door, I wanted mine to be a touch smaller and beveled the edges down to flow into the groove to look more factory. In my case it was personal preference and just being somewhat finicky about looks.

Good luck and hope for a speedy recovery from your surgery.

I wonder, if you have the equipment....what if you popped one of your panels off, then pressed it down flat (pin head side down, of course) then traced it out. Then scan to an actual size PDF. Then anyone with an access cab could print it out and quickly mark and accurately cut the ABS. Might save a lot of fitting and filing for we who come after you. Just a thought.

Thanks for the thought. It's gonna be a long 1 armed winter.

I will see what I can do. I do have access to the equipment to scan a trace outline of one. Just not sure how easy it will be to pop one back off.

I played with this some today and it wasn't that difficult. I did 1 piece using 3/32" ABS following the BassMech technique and it came out OK. Not as perfect as yours but I don't have a lot of patience for the craftsy stuff. I may use this piece or redo it better next spring when I'll be able to get to the speaker install.

BTW, I think the material is too stiff to press flat to get a decent trace of the final product, but if you can it might help some folks.

    [thread revival]

I am looking to put some speakers in the rear doors of my 2012 access cab, just wondering if there is somewhere to grab the OE speaker wires without having to pull the headunit. Any one find/know where the wires that power the crap in headliner speakers are run? I already have speakers and adapters, I just need the signal to power them :(

Thanks in advance for any help.

**and as soon as I looked for another few minutes I found these...

In case anyone else comes looking for the same info I was...

On the 2012, the overhead speaker wires can be found under the driver's side A-pillar. Remove the grab handle and then the plastic piece and there is a small black connector that contains the speaker wires. The pink and Purple wires are for the left side speaker and the blue and green are for the right side. The wires are: violet L-, pink L+, blue R-, green R+

Got the info from this thread, thanks to Snowrx!

Finally decided to to get around to cutting the hole out of my doors, installed the speakers a few weeks ago. Almost identical to BassMechanic install.

First off, I suggest you do this cutting with the panel still off the truck, otherwise you might end up drilling your speaker cone

    IMG_20140706_145737214_HDR_zps132e24b0_ff11c1c682eae233f2a7858cc7205dbd44f3a0c4.jpg

I drilled a hole to get an idea where the speaker was, but because it had been a little since I had last seen the speakers I got a little off center when I started cutting the hole. I used a utility knife to cut the panel, works well, just have to be careful if you want to finish with 10 fingers. Luckily this chop job all gets covered up.

After discussing this project with a coworker, he suggested the possibility of an elbow being inserted accidentally into the speakers, I decided to drill out the cover panel instead of a straight hole. I marked the panel with a 0.5cm grid and then hit the drill press for some tedious and eye straining fun.

Final picture for the driver's side door, need to do the passenger side still because it took a little longer than I had hoped and it was really hot and humid out.

I still haven't even started/finished my passenger side hole cutting or cover, so as far as delivery times I'd be horrible for that.

Bass Mechanic can you link me to this original post where you tell what all you did to get this done. I’m fixing to add rear speakers to my 3015 access cab in the rear and this is the best set up I’ve seen. Thanks!!!

Can you give me a link to the post where you did the speakers in the back seat of a access cab, I’m fixing to do mine and the way you did the speaker covers is the best I’ve seen and I want to see how you did the covers. Thanks!!!
