appropriate lift to clear 33" tires and at the very least a rear locker. Sliders and skids. Might want to remove the front and rear bumper for the trip. And a winch with other appropriate recover gear. Also, I think the Maxtrax are game changers in the off road world. I was skeptical at first but after seeing them in action, they are worth the price of admission. They speed up mud and snow recovery tremendously w/ very little effort. They can be used to 'bridge' some obstacles and you won't need to stack rocks or at least as many rocks.

Also, the Rubicon has been on my bucket list for 25 years. I've done A LOT of World class trails living in Colorado and near Utah/Moab. Keep us updated on what you end up doing and how it goes so I can plan a trip. :D

I led trail for the Toyota Rubithon Event for 20+ years so have guided a lot of different rigs through. Bring a good spotter or 2 as there are quite a few places where it will be a seriously tight fit. I've led quite a few of the previous generation Taco's through with little or no damage, and quite a few 80 series wagons. If you do the whole trail you will most likely damage the rear quarters at least...the newer taco's are simply a bit to long and wide to fit in some of the places they need to go. Took an 80 series wagon down the Tahoe side to the Springs last year with only minor scrapes to the rear fender flares (same rock both directions), but what is normally about a 2-2.5 hour trip took us 5 hours. The 80 was fairly stock with 33's, Slee Sliders and a factory hitch that saw lots of abuse! If you must take the Taco, at a minimum have sliders, skids, no mud flaps. A Marlin Crawler would make it much easier as it allows for much slower speeds. Wana go through with ease....build it like this 4-runner...they are about the same size (OK...the Taco is bigger).....and yes, sliders were added before it saw the Rubicon. Better yet, hook up with someone who is doing Rubithon in June and go first time as a passenger...might get you to change your mind about doing the Rubicon in a second gen Taco (unless it is a dedicated trail rig or you like body damage).
