The new engine will have two types of fuel injection. For regular driving it will use the standard fuel injectors, for an extra boost in power it will have direct inject. Toyota like others will have to find a way to get more MPG's in the coming years. The new engine we have tested for the Lexus, Avalon, Camry, will have 305 hp.

One can never have too many light bars.
In theory the Tacoma can use the same motor as the Toyota cars and even through it produces the same amount of power to the crank. With a differential gear ratio (such as a 4.10 stock for the v6) it should still feel like it has the low end power off the line. The 1st gen 3.4 v6 Tacoma came stock with a 4.10 gear ratio and it felt pretty good at low rpms even though the power numbers were relatively low to the crank. The new motor will most likely have a 6 speed tranny that is very different from any car application so it won't feel anything like the engines in the camry and avalon. It's been a long time since Toyota has built a bad motor especially for it's trucks/ SUV's so I'm not worried about it at all here.

Why wouldn't they use direct injection all the time? Isn't that what everyone's raving about? Also, are you saying the 2016 will have 305 hp? That's a lot more than most are guessing.

Direct injection isn't good for low end torque. Trucks like low end torque.

I don't know how the setup will be for the taco. I've heard that the lobes on the cams may be different and the timing set different to adjust for more torque thus losing a little bit of horsepower. As far as direct injection, there is more machining required for the engine and more complicated programs for ECU, thus more cost. I can tell you the test we put these engines through are far beyond anything that will be in any taco and they definitely prove themselves.

I was under the impression that direct injection was just an improvement in general

That makes sense. As far as direct injection costing more, isn't this what other manufacturers started doing 10 years ago? The Tacoma is pretty pricey already too.

Are you saying with that last bit that this engine you're talking about will or will not be in the Tacoma?

Sounds like we're getting a less advanced version of it.

The engine also has port injection. I imagine that it can have the best of both worlds?

If properly implemented with the right cams then yes.

Direct injection engines are also prone to carbon buildup. Haven't port injection as well should help with the carbon issues.

Will the 4.3 gear ratio make it unnecessary to re-gear if you want to run 33's?

Hell if I know. All depends on the gearing in the tranny

    Likely no.

The 4.3 gear ratio is probably to make up for a lower torque output from this new motor over the 4.0 L or a different set of transmission ratios. Either way your truck is still going to feel like it's working harder on 33's just like the current Tacoma's.

My Tacoma is on 33's and I don't feel like it hurt the truck that much....

I think you need gears for 35's on the 2nd generation Tacoma, but at 33's you can get by fine.
