What do most Tacomas not have that allows them that extra 1 to 3 hundred lbs you mentioned? Also, what is the limiting factor in the hauling capacity? the composite bed, the shocks, the leaf springs?

Hey 10!! I'll say it. We all need a few more inches, but I've come to terms with so I can drive a Tacoma and not a full size.

Ghost, I'm in same boat. I'm a weekend warrior, so can't justify a full size (parking/gas/garage space). Thread turned south for a bit, but we got it turned around and productive

That's why I liked my 1st Gen Tundra, the mid size was nice. Honestly the Tacoma fits my needs better 99% of the time. Just seeing all that space between the tire and be had going "c'mon!".

I've had the Tundra almost sitting on the bump stops, and yes I broke a few leaf springs. I've got a trailer if I need to haul a lot. And Larry, yes delivery is kind of an option. Cabin is no road access, so I have to haul everything in a boat from the boathouse out there. I can get delivery before noon on Sat to the boathouse and pay $$ small town lumber prices.

In reverse order of how you asked.

    2. Toyota sets the limiting factor. Feel free to put as much drywall as you want in your truck. ;)

    1. Add a long bed, double cab, 4 wheel drive, automatic transmission and some other options and you lose that 300 lbs. trucks w/o out those options can carry.

Sounds like paying for delivery is the best choice.

    1. Doh! I knew that.
    2. Lol, point taken, but really what is it? I assume the leaf springs since they're so soft. Is it as much as you can haul without hitting the bumpstops? I know shocks have something to do with it which is why the raptor can't haul/tow as much as an f150, as well as the fact that our f150 eco boost had "towing shocks" that increased the capacity by a lot.

    Springs, shocks, tires, axle bearings.

You can add new springs or airbags, heavy duty shocks, D rated tires but the axle bearing are always going to be the same. You might be able to find some special built, hardened titanium bearings but that's your "weak point".

There is also a safety factor engineered into limits/capacities. Basically the limitations are for worst case scenarios; bumpy roads, high speeds, etc. Overload by 300# for 2 miles over good roads at 35 mph, and you are not going to have an issue..
