Outback ones are $1340, and that's without shipping!

    http://outbackproven.com/i-14394349-toyota-tacoma-33-gal-front-replacement-tank.html

***edit after phone call to Custom Exhaust Specialties***

CES quoted $1800 for the tank, and a total of about $2400 if they do the install.

    Differences:
Outback Proven - tank extends over driveshaft, next to the exhaust & muffler
Custom Exhaust - tank extends forward towards the transmission

    Capacities:
    Outback Proven - 33 Gal
    Custom Exhaust - 39 Gal

... Was unable to talk with my local shop today, but after seeing the price and capacities of the available commercial tanks, I think I will stick with my original plan. Transfer tank in the spare tire cavity. Will keep y'all posted!

    UPDATE!!!

Went to the aforementioned shop this afternoon, and explained to the owner what I was wanting to do. He tells me that they can't make gas tanks for vehicles due to insurance and DOT regulations. While he tells me this, he writes down a phone number and says "Call *Bob*, he can help you" :spy:

I just about busted up laughing!

Anyway, called the guy, and talked through it on the phone. He sounded a little apprehensive. He's built tanks before, but his experience is they are a royal pain. He agreed to take a look at my truck, so I drove out to his place.

After seeing how much free space there was under the bed, he decided that the job would actually not be too tough. We spent about an hour under the truck brainstorming and measuring and marking things off.

Cardboard mock-up will be ready this weekend, and I'll be back for a test fit, and we'll measure out brackets. We will be mounting the tank using only pre-existing holes in the frame, which is nice. The only cutting required will be for the fill system. Auxilliary fill nozzle will be in the bed storage box on the driver's side, and I'll have to cut out a small section of the underside of the bed liner.

So now that the tank design is rolling, I will be working on the transfer system. Time to put my electronics background to work! :D

Rough estimate out of the gate for the entire project is $1000. Probably will end up slightly less, but the bulk of the cost will be for the manufacture of the tank. Still, that's about half the price of the available commercial tanks.

Estimated capacity with our rough measurements is 17 gallons, but we were very conservative, and I'm confident we can expand the dimensions to get 20-25 gallons without running into any issues.

Pictures & more updates as I have them.

I looked into a way to add a secondary tank, the best way I found was to remove the spair tire, get an aftermarket Ford Branco II composit tank and mount it with tank straps in the spair tire spot. Remove licens plate drill hole to accommodate filler and remount plate with a spring hinge (just like the old '70's and '80's cars) then hook up a fuel pump to both tanks (bottom of the bronco tank, and drill a hole in your factory tank to transfer fuel) and hook up the pump electrical to a switch. This way as your factory tank runs low just kick the switch on and it will fill your tank as needed. Also, if you do not need all that extra fuel (at about 8.2 lbs per gallon) your not hauling around an extra 180 lbs of fuel. Also with this set up, the only extra volume your adding to your factory fuel system (as long as you don't have any vapor leaks) is the bit of fuel line up to the extra fuel pump, and you should not pop any hvac codes.

Essentially what I'm doing here. Just a custom-fitted tank, rather than a commercially made one.
