Initial post. Just acquired a black1999 Taco 4WD, V6, straight shift with the TRD off-road package. Lotsa miles at 236k. Runs good, almost everything works and what doesn't is very minor, looks like maintenance has been with all Toyota parts and has not been hacked up. The only mods I have found so far are 16 inch wheels from a FJ. Truck is a spare vehicle, maybe a toy but at least something to run to Home Depot or Lowes in and not hang 2x4s out of my 4runner. Years and years ago i played in the dirt and rocks enough to always be working on the drivetrain of various 4wd vehicles I owned. I am uncomfortable not having a 4wd vehicle in the driveway even if I rarely use it's capabilities and live in the south where snow is a holiday. My daily driver is a 06 4WD, V8 Limited 4runner. My other vehicles are old Alfa Romeos, tinkered and tuned to perfection driven on nice days but in no way daily drivers. I do have a 96 4wd Jimmy SLT with 249k miles and original drivetrain. Its been a remarkably reliable truck but not 4 wheeled very often. I'll probably wash it and put it on craigs list to make my wife feel that I have some sense and not just a vehicle hoarder--but it's hard to fool her and it's hard for me to let good vehicles go (almost like a good dog) along with much else--you should see my shop.

I'll be scanning through post and looking for wisdom and experience as I go through the Taco to bring it up to snuff and figuring it all out. Ist thing I need is a downloadable shop/repair manual. My quick look search so far hasn't turned up much. Old Toyota shop manuals seem to sell by the pound at gold prices Is the Chilton or Haynes manuals any good or worth having?

    I'll put a pic later--

    Frank
