Very quick question re rear shocks

Hi all. This should be a quickie. With 100k on the odo I am looking to replace my shocks (and find someone to do the struts).

Bilstein specifies rear left, or rear right, for its shocks. Does this matter? (I recall swapping out shocks on a different model Toyota and they were identical.) In other words can I purchase 2 of this item:

In their catalog do the shocks have the same part #??

 

One is a bit longer than the other. You might be OK getting the longer size for both sides, but then you run some risk of bottoming one before the other. Both shorter and you could over extend one. I want to say its about an inch difference, they are close, but not the same.

 

They are side specific. The longer one goes on the driver side to compensate for the extra weight of the driver, gas tank, etc. So you won't have the infamous Tacoma lean.

 

How does shock length have any effect on ride height?

OP they are side specific because one mounts toward the front of the axle and the other toward the rear, so they are different lengths.

Checked the part #s before installation, and the longer shock actually goes on the passenger side. Has to do with being mounted top towards the front on that side.
