I've never traded a gun in before, how do I access fair value? I have a Springfield XDM compact .40 with 2 additional OEM mags, all the original accessories, and case. What do you think a fair trade in amount would be?

Never trade-in guns. I was just at a pawn shop getting help checking a bunch of my mom's jewelry to see what was real and what was costume as well as having the dude go through a bunch of coins to tell me what was valuable and what wasn't. While I was there there was a dude who sold them a Gen 3 Glock 17 w/two mags that looked damn near brand new. THe guy offered him $250 for it and he took it! They'll put that gun on the shelf for $500 and settle on $450 probably to sell it. I'm not sure what the guy needed the money for but it was apparently urgent to take a bath like that on a super popular firearm that would have been easy to sell within a week or two on the open market. Hell, had he posted it for $350-$400 on a local forum he would have had buyers lined up to meet him within minutes. I don't get the mindset of some people.

You're taking it in the shorts to let someone else sell it for you so why not just sell it yourself? Take a little extra time and get what your gun is worth in resale. Best bet is to find local gun forums, join and become a contributing member. Then, before you know it, you'll be known/trusted and will be buying & selling firearms all day long at deals fair to you. If you want to trade it in... Good luck!

What Ostrichsak said. Also if you don't mind me asking, why you want to get rid of it?

+I the Springer XD is a fine weapon if your into plastic frames and the .40 is good all around load.

I love it but when I bought it, I thought I would only ever need one gun to suit all of my needs. How foolish I was. My gf has now moved in and likes this one sitting on the night stand. When I go camping or leave it in the truck, she doesn't like the feeling of only being protected by our 3 extremely vicious guard dogs. I plan on buying an M&P Shield in .40 to carry and to leave in the truck, and since I'll then have a dedicated night stand weapon, I wouldn't mind having a full size in that spot. I could use the XDM as the night stand weapon, but I'd just prefer something larger, not a necessity. I was offered $350 for it on trade at a local gun shop but that number didn't make me happy. I'm going tomorrow to a different shop but might just pick up the Shield and not worry about the trade in for now since I was planning on trading in for the full size anyways.

I've got a Shield .40 as an EDC that tucks away in my Console Vault. Great little pistol. Though I carry an extra mag with it.

The XDM .40 (4.5") has night sights and acts as the night stand weapon. Used to be my EDC but it won't fit in a Console Vault. :( And since I live in the communist state of Montana I need to be able to secure it when I enter Gun Free Zones.

If you do trade your XDM Compact do it someplace reputable. I traded a Glock 26 once. Took great care of that as it was my backup firearm when I was LEO. They rated it at 98 or 99% condition when they resold it. Guy told me he'd likely mark it up $50 over what he gave me for it. Saw it on their website a day later at $80 over what he gave me. Personally I just didn't want to deal with selling it privately and had decided I didn't want it. Never felt comfortable in my hand.

I was offered $350 for it so I didn't trade it in. I went ahead and got the Shield .40 anyways. I currently have both but haven't got to get out and shoot the new Shield yet so I haven't been carrying it. The guy that runs my favorite cycling shop offered me $500 in store credit for it, I might take him up on it but I just got hit with a tax bill from 2 years ago for almost $1100 so I'd rather have cash at the moment.
