Hey guys, I'm about 3 weeks out on the delivery of my 2015 Tacoma v6 6speed silver sky metallic double cab short bed.

any tips on the break in? I know new motors nowadays don't need to be broken in the same way as they used to but still thinking of changing oil after about 1000 miles... Maybe mobile 1? I'm more concerned with breaking in the clutch, I've been driving manual for years so not worried about damaging it, just curious to see how long you guys think I should baby it.

Anything else I should know about or look out for? Open to all advice and suggestions.

    Thanks in advance!

I changed my oil out of my truck at 2500mi for peace of mind.

Dont use the dealer for oil changes.... EVER. 45 bucks on ebay gets you 10 OEM oil filter n drain plug gaskets.

The best recommendation i can give you.... at say 5k miles.... CHANGE THE REAR DIFF FLUID. it will come out NASTY at 5k and you dont want that sitting in there for any longer.

$45 for for 10 filters and the plug gaskets?! Or just gaskets for both? I was definitely going to do the oil myself. Not trusting some random schmo.

Differential oil too?? Never would have thought that. Thanks for the heads up. I'm assuming after first rear diff change I'll be good for a while right?

45 for 10 OEM D3 oil filters and 10 oem plug gaskets

and yeah the diff oil often gets forgotten, break in oil gets nasty QUICK so change it out at 5k, then the regular intervals after that. This will save your pinion and carrier bearings from premature wear.

Thanks guys! I actually test drove a 2008 win 75k on it that sounded like the throw out bearing was shot... Is that about how long I can expect it to last?

32k miles of abuse on my '14 6spd and no bearing issues, yet. Used the Toyota care without a problem through 24k miles.

Shift a little slower then a sports car and the trans will be happy. Mine was grabby until it broke in a bit (takes a couple thousand miles). The first 5000-7000 miles I got 1-2 mpg worse then I do now too.

Don't be afraid to use 4-lo to avoid excess clutch slippage on super steep grades, though I mostly use it when crawling up the grades with a small trailer when off-roading.

Thanks for the towing advice! I'll probably use 4 low when I trailer my boat up the launch ramp. I have a 17' aluminum v hull so not a heavy boat but I was curious to see how tough it would be on the clutch but I guess the 4low would be a much more effective use of the power

Depends, I can pull a couple thousand pounds without much issue taking off but 4-lo makes creeping at 3-4 mph possible. Ease out on the clutch though, it's grabby in 4-lo.

Many manufacturers recommend NO TOWING for the first 500 miles for rear axle break-in. I really wouldn't worry about the clutch, since you are an experienced manual tranny owner. 58K miles on a 09 6 speed - no issues, but I usually get 200k miles or more out of a clutch.

if you saw rear diff fluid after a good breakin at 5k miles you would feel different about that statement.

Picked up my '15 6MT 6 weeks or so ago... Shifting was notchy for about 300 miles or so, then it smoothed out. First gear is short on the street, and I find myself in 4th a lot earlier than I thought I'd be while in town.

4LO on boat ramps is the way to go: Less wear and tear on the clutch, and with 1st being so short, you're just out of the water before you know it. Just don't forget to make the switch to 2wd once you're up the ramp...

    I'm liking it so far!

Awesome! Thanks for the advice guys. Looking forward to this truck for so many reasons.. These next couple weeks are going to drag!

Haven't even seen the damn truck yet and the mental mod list is building lol. Real interested in the trd short throw shifter. I installed one in my '88 Mazda 626 turbo and its SO much better now, performance wise and mainly just cruising around town. Anybody have any experience with these?

I can't speak to the short throw shifter, but we do have one on the WRX, not the Abarth though...

I'd say drive it the way it is for a bit. I don't know if I'd spend the money on one now that I've driven it like it is. It's not an Abarth or a WRX, it's a half ton truck!

    Others will chime in though...

Backing a trailer up a hill sucks. The reverse gear is geared too high. I often have to throw it in 4 low (thankfully I've only been backing up a dirt hill with a trailer).

If you live in a cold climate prepare for the clutch to get very stiff in cold until very long warm up (10-15 min) is done. Sometimes it may stick to the floor for a second. Dealers have told me the is normal.

Throwout bearing issues, and squeak in the pedal.

Used gear oil is nasty, whether it's got 5k or 30k on it.

There is no benefit to changing any of the fluids early. You're just wasting oil.

I've had no complaints with my transmission, but compared to a Jeep or a Mustang with a Getrag 6 speed the Tacoma gear box is pretty nice just don't expect to shift it fast. My only gripe is the clutch is a little grabby when the truck is cold.

I have the TRD quick shift, and I consider it necessary for the V6 6 speed manual. Granted I'm probably spoiled with Honda's (S2000, TSX) but the standard 6 speed manual throws are too long. If it weren't for the quick shift I most likely would have gone with the slush box.

Yeah that was my first thought during the test drive. I too am spoiled considering my other car has a short throw shifter but I like it more for practicality than performance. It's nice only having your engine speed only drop 500rpms or so in between shifts. Helps me shift into a higher gear at a lower rpm with smoother shifts.

My other question is did you guys install it yourself? I did my sts on my car but I'm hesitant on working on a brand new truck. With my luck I'd break a plastic clip taking apart the interior and hate myself for the next 10 years hahaha

How much did it run you guys if you went through the dealer?
