Just spitballing an idea. We are looking for CHEAP ways to increase the functionality of our second hand Leer cap for camping and potential bug out rig. That obviously means more storage. Again, going for cheap here.
I have seen several rooftop baskets for sale on CL for under $100, but that means expensive crossbars and whatnot. Or does it? I am thinking about bolting it directly through the roof with some sort of thick rubber isolators and using a piece of plywood the full width of the roof on the inside to act as a giant washer.
For shits and giggles I would carpet the plywood and incorporate a series of nylon webbings and buckles to strap some things to the roof.
obviously this would NOT be a place for tossing heavy goods like water or gas jugs. Or the mother in law...

    Any thoughts or input?

It would work, and you wouldn't need the sheet of plywood on the inside, just a big fender washer. If you think about it, those track systems are just through bolted through the shell also, so whats the difference if you cut out the middle man and just bolt the basket on directly? Just be careful what you put up there, the non-commercial caps aren't rated to haul a lot of weight up top.

Weathertech floor liners moded to hold OEM floor mats, weathertech vent visors, Toyota bed mat, LEER 100XL cap, hood gasket mod to stop whistling.
I'm skeptical, I would sure want to bolt out as far as I could. The LEER cap does not have a lot of strength in the middle to support any decent weight. The stock LEER system is out near the curve in the roof.
