I'm a new member and this is my first post. I just picked up a 2000 Xtra cab 4x4 SR5 with a bad automatic trans in it. When we dropped the pan there was some planetary metal on the magnets. This really jacks the rebuild price. From what I've seen the trans, which is used in a number vehicles (with configuration changes) is a very solid unit. My question is (and I'm pretty sure the answer is yes) will one from a 99 4Runner be a direct swap?

I figured someone would come up with an answer for me. Thanks. I started to go the "Japanese Take-out" route but once I got both tail housing adapters off I found the "import" had an extra 20mm of splined shaft sticking out. I didn't want to take a chance on slicing it off and not be certain about the other components switching out so I sucked it up on the freight and sent it back to them. I've had good luck in the past with engines but this trans didn't pan out. I found one in a 99 4Runner w/ 150k for $500 locally. I'll just do that and get her going.

Yes, the only thing you MAY have to swap over is the neutral safety switch. I am currently running a 99 4Runner trans in my 02 Tacoma with only that change. 4x4 to 4x4 swap only. The 2wd trans has a totally different output shaft.
