I locked my keys in for the first time and hopefully I won't do it again. Luckily I had a friend run home and grab my spare (he is a fellow Tacoma owner but not a TW member). I am considering hiding my key somewhere on the truck. Good idea, or bad idea?

The best places I could think of are under the bed liner hanging from a D-Ring or in the hitch receiver (I have a cap for it).

    Any input is much appreciated.

My only suggestion is do not use the magnetic metal box hide a key, they rust. Quick.
When you need the key, the magnet will still be there, but the box is long gone.

That's as good as anyplace. Many vehicles are just getting winched up on a flat bed. Matters not if they can get in.

If you leave valuables in plain sight, they are just gonna break a window to grab them.

I like the magnetic key boxes. They stick real good anywhere metal.

I use bailing wire and "tie" it up somewhere under the frame. In 16 years I have never lost one.

This seemed like a novel idea when I first read through the thread a while ago. I'd assume it'd also work on a 1st gen, with slightly different wiring. A little more complicated than hiding a key, but you wouldn't have to deal with any of the usual issues with hiding a key.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/wiring-external-button-to-unlock-doors.377879/

A hitch safe might also be something to look at.

I have wrapped mine in plastic wrap and put under my license plate (held with 4 screws). You'll need a screwdriver to get it, but that usually not hard to find.

Zip tie under the frame works well also.

I got a few friends using those trailer hitch lock boxes... To me its noticable(like look at me I got something in here), but they are durable as hell.

Since I drive so many different vehicles I always have 2 keys for the vehicles on me at all times.

One is for using in the ignition with just a house key. all the others live on my other key ring.

This key ring is in my left pocket the one pulled out of the ignition goes in my right pocket.

that way the weight on the ignition switch is as little as possible

I started doing this years ago so my Diesel engine could run while I was having coffee and the doors could still be locked

    It works for me

What I do is keep a spare key in my wallet, ever since I locked my self out once..

I have a spare key hidden "INSIDE" all of my vehicles with the chip that will start the engine. There is a spare key without the chip hidden under the vehicle in a spot that will likely require me to get pretty dirty in order to retrieve it. Not saying someone might not find it, but they'll have to work for it and when it won't start the engine my hope is that they won't think about, or have time to look for the 2nd key.

If they want inside to steal stuff they'll just break a window.

skid the hide a key thing, just put a spare key in your wallet in one of those unused pockets and its always with you no matter what.

as mentioned those hide a key things can go missing or worse someone uses the key you gave them hidden somewhere to steal your truck

Another vote for the key-in-wallet option. I've done this for years and it has saved my bacon a few times.

I guess the key in wallet works if you only need to carry one key.

Perhaps in this day and age I could get away carrying a purse with my extra keys

I've already got a George Castanza wallet!! Couldn't image adding a key to it haha

I've got a spare zip tied under the truck, near the transfercase. In 4 yrs I've needed it once, and was soo glad I had it!

How many keys do you need to get into your truck? That is what the OP asked about.
