Hi everyone. I have searched and read and read and searched and while there is quite a few topics on this no one seems to have had quite the same situation as I have. So, I believe I have discovered why my speedometer will not work and am now looking for some info from the experts to make sure I'm on the right track. So I have a 1998 Tacoma with a manual transmission and the 3.4. The transfer case gave up the ghost so I swapped in one from a 2000 4Runner with the automatic and the 3.4. The speedometer hook up between the two is different due the the transmissions. The standard needs to take it from the back of the transfer case. To me the worm gears in transfer cases look the very same. If I put the truck in neutral and roll in back and forth I can feel the worm in the transfer case spinning, so I know that is good. I then taped a drill to the speedometer gear and had some one watch the speedo inside the truck, it got up to speed no problem, so that is working fin as well. So though process of elimination I have concluded that the speedo gear is too small and there for is not meshing with the worm. Does this sound like a probable diagnosis? I have called Toyota and the parts guy told me that all speedometer gears are the same diameter regardless of the tooth count, which seems impossible from what I know about gears. So now is the second question, what is the best way to find out which gear I require? Is there a chart somewhere or is it just a matter or trying gears until I find one that fits? Thank you for any I for you might have!!

You are correct that the gear diameters have to be different in order to fit more or less teeth. With that being said, you will need to examine your speedo gear to determine which one you have. I came across this post on another forum that helped me get a gear for my auto transmission, but it may help you as well. There are many gears listed.

I think I went down to a 28 if I recall, I wish I had the part number but I believe I posted it on here a couple years back. My speedo with 33s is dead on now

Ok cool, I think I might start at the next higher tooth count and see if that meshes with the worm, just keep working my way up from there, thanks again for the help

Also belassaiw10, where did you get your gear from? Just your local Toyota dealer?

You can get it from any dealer, if your local one is cheap go with them. It will probably have to be ordered either way and you will definitely need the part number because they will not be able to find what you are looking for.

Make sure you read through the thread I posted. They come to the conclusion that manual and automatic 4wd can use the same gears. The part numbers you are looking for are on the 2nd page.

I ordered mine online because I needed the whole little assembly, I'd imagine the different sized gears, aren't actually small enough to not catch the teeth because then there would be no need to get a lower gear if it didn't work... Post a picture of what you have you might have a gear out of the prerunner or something

02 Tacoma, fixed with curse words.
I had the same problem when i swapped tcases when my stock one broke. I got one out of a 3.4 tacoma (don't know the year or the trans that it came from) and the speedo would not work. I swapped speedo gears and then the speedo worked again. I don't remember what gear i went with, but you are not going nuts lol!!

Thanks guys, I did look through the second page there, I am going write down all those numbers and start with probably one tooth more and instead of the 11 go with the 10, I'm not sure if that number pertains to the whole depth, pitch, etc of the gear but the plug that I took out of the current transfer case has a 10 stamped on it so this seems like a good place to start. Slander, I'm happy to hear someone has been here before, I was starting to lose it a little bit trying to figure this out. I have attached a picture of the gear that is currently in the truck.

Pull that gear out and see if it matches the one I posted, it almost looks like the one I took out of my prerunner. Different location but it would fit into the 4wd speed sensor. Could be your problem but can't tell ya for sure

I know this is a dead thread but I just finished my 4WD conversion and had a gear question. My 4Runner transfer case didn't come equipped with one so I dropped in an aftermarket ebay sensor with a 33 tooth gear and no number stamping since it's aftermarket. At low speeds it's a few mph off but on the highway it gets to be about 10mph off. Should I just buy the 32 and 31 gears and try and find one close? That iH8 mud thread post linked above doesn't even list a 28 tooth gear.

IMO, might be easier to install a dakota digital sgi5 and make speed correction versus buying and installing speed gear??

I wouldn't have to take apart my dash if I can determine what gear tooth count I need. And gears are $15-$30 while that controller is $80. If I can't figure out the gears soon I'll go with the controller.

Id try a different tooth count, wish the chart still worked as I have forgotten the tooth count difference for speeds

The 30 tooth #33403-39365 gear worked out great.
