Those cubbies might come in handy if you have a shell and want to place your keys or a flashlight in while your are sleeping.

Toyota Exec: "Wouldn't it be funny to add something to the bed to confuse all our fans?"

Toyota Engineer: "You mean like a useless feature that nobody can figure out?"

Toyota Exec: "Yes, but specifically for the American markets."

Toyota Engineer: "Okay. Well I can easily put a dent in the side. Like a cubby hole - but not. Not big enough to really put stuff in or designed to keep things from falling out."

Toyota Exec: "Yes, that's exactly what I was looking for! Just mold a dent in the side of the bed."

Toyota Engineer: "What if we are formally asked what it is?"

Toyota Exec: "Just... tell them it's a structural thing."

That's not very nice considering everyone answered your question.

I personally wouldn't put keys in there because it's openly visible. I take the cubby out, put the keys on the wheel hump in the bed side wall, and put the cover back on.

OP why don't you work on a storage solution that actually works? You'd profit I bet.

Well now that we've solved this, it's time to derail the thread.
