Transmission whine

Went out to rescue a truck today that was buried in mud and water.

Now I have transmission whine on acceleration (pump straining for fluid). While the supercharger like whine sounds pretty sweet, I know it's base juju.

Dropping the pan and replacing the filter tonight. Let's hope my good deed goes unpunished and the filter fixes the issue, because a thousand dollar transmission pump is not going to be a fun reward for a good deed.

 

Are you sure it is coming from the transmission? It could be a pulley or the alternator making the noise.

 

or a sticky pressure regulator valve in the valve body

 

Replaced the lower idler pulley thinking that could be it, no change.

 

So it only does it when under strain/acceleration in fwd? (i.e. not at Idle out of gear and rev'ing it up??

 

Fixed it.

Ended up being the middle idler bearing. Was able to return the lower idler bearing. $40 repair. Not bad.

Noise existed under all conditions, become louder under acceleration.

 

40 bucks beats the crap out of tearing into a transmission. Always work from simple to complex and cheap to expensive.
