My truck is 3 years old already and I love it!! I plan to keep it for a long time!
Well - that is, until a newer tacoma with even more fancy gadgets comes out. :D Already, the 2010's have NAV, backup cameras, aux ports, and all that traction stuff (I could've had that in mine but really didn't care at the time).

The longest I've ever owned any vehicle was 5 years - and not because they were junkers, but because....It was time to upgrade and I can afford it.

Say, the 1st gen trucks lasted from 95.5 -2004. Will there be a 3rd generation in 2014?

All the fancy features that exist in most of their other vehicles - Will they finally include all that in the tacomas? Aside from all the things our trucks don't have..... or should have....

Do you think we'll ever get AWD?
Do you think we'll ever see a hybrid tacoma?
Do you think we'll ever see coil rear suspension?
Do you think we'll ever see IRS?
Do you think we'll get a V8? Diesel?

If you search for 'Tacoma concept' - you get the 'Incross' which is just a 2nd gen with a V8 in it. Realistically - I doubt we'll see a V8 or Diesel in a tacoma. If you gotta have a V8, Toyota would rather sell more Tundras. Why would they put a V8 in a Tacoma to hinder sales of their Tundra?

I'm not sure we'll see any of that stuff (above) in 5 years. If anything...and I know there's a thread around here somewhere that states all the things people wish their trucks had - like power seats and all that stuff.

I remember back in 2000 (or somewhere around that time) - I went to MOAB with TTORA. Back then - the folks talked with Toyota and told them we wanted a double cab long bed version. So - Toyota did indeed LISTEN and give us what we wanted essentially. It just took a while.....

Do you think we'll ever get AWD? No.
Do you think we'll ever see a hybrid tacoma? Maybe...
Do you think we'll ever see coil rear suspension? No.
Do you think we'll ever see IRS? No.
Do you think we'll get a V8? Diesel? V8, yes. Diesel, no.

If they ever come out with a Diesel Tacoma, that will be the only way I will get rid of this one. No other option matters to me. Well, maybe the 5.7 in a single cab short bed...that would be badass.

I wish Toyota would create a hybrid or diesel Taco. I am in a truck with "stuff" like power everything for the first time in my life. I have to admit that the "stuff" is nice, but I am not as likely to get out of this truck for that kind of stuff. I drove my last two trucks for 12+years each, and both were stock basic packages with manual everything and no bells and whistles, and that was fine with me. But I would trade this truck in for a new one in a heart beat if Toyota came up with a hybrid or Diesel that looked like a taco, and not that ridiculous A Bat!

I settled for this truck because of my present circumstances. I just hope that when things change for me, Toyota will be offering my dream truck in a hybrid or Diesel, and yes, with a few bells and whistles, because by then, I will be spoiled! I have to admit that as much as I love Tacos, I envy the gas mileage that Prius drivers get. I know that trucks can't compete with compacts on that score, but couldn't we get a little closer? After all, Toyota was pretty innovative when they brought their first small, high mpg trucks out on the market.

Janster, you should do a poll on what changes we taco drivers would like to see most, and send it to Toyota! ;)

If I could get everything my 2000 Taco 4x4 has in it in a new body style that would work. I don't need all the electronic stability control or downhill assistance or some damn switch on the dash to engage 4wd. Call me old school but when I need 4wd I want to know I got it engaged not sitting there watching some damn light blink on the dash. I like my power windows and sunroof. When I turn the a/c on I want ice on my nuts not some option where you set the temp and it keeps it there. I'm not driving a house, I'm driving a truck. Besides all the stuff that is kinda neat on the new ones isn't really all that neat. I mean a 400w inverter that's only 400w when idling and in park? WTF. It should be 400w while driving and 100w while parked....or better yet just 400w period. Well hell I can put one of them in a truck if I feel like I need one. Fog lights I can add myself. Now a factory locker would be a nice option, other than that all I need is what's in my 2000. Give us the manual transfer case back! Oh and they can keep that damn JBL sound system too....cause all it's gona do is junk up a corner I could use for something else. ok....stepping down off my soapbox....whew!

In terms of power and capabilites - it could stay a 4.0L, leaf sprung with drum brakes. They all work just fine and the truck handles fine. As long as the towing capacity & payload stay the same. I couldn't care too much about the gas mileage either. Gas or diesel, hybrid or whatever. I don't care. The truck is perfectly setup the way it is, for the most part. I don't need anymore or any less in life currently. In 5 years from now?

I'm older now and all my life I've had bare bones vehicles - and - actually, as stupid as it sounds....I want all the cushy things. I want power seats with dual memory, I want a sunroof, power rear mirror, heated mirrors, NAV and all those cushy things. I think an AWD Tacoma would be ideal...ALSO with a low range and/or the options of switching from AWD, RWD, or 4WD.
Hmm...sounds like an atlas transfer case. :D

Most importantly....I don't want these trucks to lose its ruggability, durability, and reliability. Like - it's already lost some of it from the 1st to 2nd gens.

    What else could go wrong?

Janster, I have to admit that this stupid truck is comfortable! LOL! The auto trans was an adjustment for me as was the power stuff, but yeah, I'm older too, and cushy definitely feels good! :D

They appeal to the masses - and unfortunately, the masses are soccer dads/moms, daily users who just need transportation and some hauling capabilities.

Where'd the box frames get us? Rust & Crushed

I wouldn't want Toyota to build an offroad rig from the factory because they wouldn't do it right. Besides.... if they did, you'd have all these 'newbie' offroaders buying them who don't have a clue about how to drive them responsibly. Look at the Jeep Rubicons. Sure - they're awesome out of the box. But every damn kid wants one and trashes the shit out of it because they think they can go everywhere. And besides...who the hell would put Dana 30 outters & bearings on a D44?? Absolutely stupid..... :D People should learn how to wheel in a stock vehicle and 'build' their rigs as they learn. Not jump into a fully capable rig right off the bat.

But yeah, I can agree with you on the 'reliability/quality' thing.
