Got a nice laminated card in the mail today saying my local Toyota dealership REALLY wanted to buy my 13' DCSB TRD prerunner back and were willing to pay "28,500" for it.

At first glance that looks nice and all then I realize I still owe 15k for it, so all else being equal I'd have a 13k down payment for a new truck where I'd owe 17-22k more for.

I wonder how many ppl fall for that though. I suppose if my truck were paid off it may make more sense, but with only 31k on mine it makes no sense. Btw I'm sure the 28.5 they are offering is more like 25 after "inspection"

When I was in getting my 5k mile oil change and checkup done I saw this posted in the service bay at the local Toyota dealer. They sell a LOT of Tacomas here in town. Apparently they are seeking all years of Tacomas where as they are pickier with other models.

I get those once a month. They want the newer vehicles back since we've already assumed the depreciation. On my offers, they go as far as telling me that mine is considered pristine both mechanically and cosmetically, and that they would give me top dollar. I would only expect the lower end offer or less... And no bargaining on the new vehicle then.

They then slap $5k back on top of what they gave you for it... And then sell you the new vehicle in which the cycle repeats again. I'm sure most people don't realize the vehicle never gets owned or paid off this way.

A friend of a friend once told us he got one of those letter's and immediately contacted the dealer to trade in his high wanted vehicle. He swore it was legit as the letter was personally written to him and signed by the office manager. We all looked at him like...:der:

They hardly make money on a new vehicle they make money on trade ins....I don't know why people think this is a scam or some sort of secret dealer mission. They want everyones truck so they can sell used where they make their money.
Their is no trick it is what it is.

They hardly make money on a new vehicle not hard to grasp. They make money on used that's why when you trade in your truck or anything its a shitty price most of the time, then they mark it up to the next buyer....they don't care about your interest rate or what finance company you go with at the end of the day they make their money used

I believe this. They make money off both. That $28,500 will most likely go down at paper signing time for little things they find 'wrong' upon inspection. The Op now has to shell out more money for a longer period of time for a new truck. They turn around and get top dollar for his old one knowing how quickly Tacoma's turn on a lot with "Low miles, hard to find, this one wont last!!" the usual used car sthick. It's a win all the way around for the dealer.

Dealers make a good chunk of their profit off new car sales, though service and parts department is numero uno profit wise and last is used vehicles. No two ways around it, new car sales make up a greater percentage of their top line compared to used car sales, but the winner is parts and service by far.

they make money on every transaction or they wouldn't be there for long. But service dept. and parts are their top performers. How many times have you heard about the "air cabin filter you must have changed only here" and the flush this...lube that.. blah blah. Most people will not look at what you MUST do for maint. versus what they sell. A dealer Not Toyota once tried to get me to do an alignment at my first 3000 miles. I was like really you guys must be hurting for money or what>>>> declined of course

Local dealer called me the other day wanting to "put us in a new 4Runner for the same payments we're making now". Apparently they are looking for a 2012 4Runner Limited. I told them that it's about paid off and I wasn't looking to get into more payments since we just bought the Tacoma. Besides, my wife loves our 4Runner.
