Ridiculously Obsessive

You find yourself waiting for receipt of ordered parts for planned modification projects. Do you also find yourself standing outside staring at your truck, just looking for something, no mater how small, to fix/change/improve while you wait?

There are four 10mm screws (two under each corner) which attach the rear bumper to the end bumper brackets. This morning as I lay on my back removing those screws, my wife's sandaled feet appeared on the ground next to me. She had come out to ask what I was doing NOW. While concentrating on not dropping the wrench in my face, I replied I was taking out the plated screws to paint them flat black before reinstalling them. When she asked why, I told her because it made the heads of the screws less obvious from the rear and the result was a visually cleaner line along the bottom of the bumper. Seconds passed without her responding. I rolled out from under the truck to gauge what I assumed would be her derisive reaction, as she disappeared without a word back into the house.

I wouldn't call spending an inordinate amount of time scanning TW a waste of time, because I'm learning a lot and enjoy learning. I have to say though, I get a little obsessed with my new ride and during occasional moments of self realization have to ask, "What the hell are you doing?" Let's start a thread detailing some of the most ridiculously obsessive things you've done in connection with your truck. Posting on this thread is obviously on the list, so start with something else. Don't be proud, fess up.

 

Does just staring at it counts haha. When I got my Pro, I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I also get them stares from other Tacoma owners, it's that color man haha.

I have ADD and when something interest me I will learn everything about it just to not care within a few weeks or months. I will obsess about my truck and spend hours researching and cleaning and modding and then be doing the same for my dirt bikes. Its a vicious cycle that my wife deals with. She didn't understand it at first but she's learned its who I am.

Plus being obsessive keeps your truck looking nice!

 

I have a google docs spreadsheet that I use to keep track of maintenance and modifications. I don't like looking at the total $$ column...

No, I don't track fuel mileage (hurts too much ha!)... but every 3-4 fill-ups, I will calculate it just for my own knowledge. Seems I always get 17 (+/- 1mpg) regardless of driving style, roads, or cargo.

 

Woman are obsessive with their looks. They spend all the time on their hair, nails, whatever, trying to look good.

Us guys, rather have our trucks look good vs our hair/nails.

 

I do the exact same thing. Senior year of high school taught myself about building computers in a few days of no class. Built it over the summer with the best parts I could get for a reasonable price, which is still well above what you can buy in a store. Now? I have to think for a minute to even tell you what parts went into it. I did the same thing with paintball, did tons of research and never even got out to play. The true obsessions stick with me, so far it's the truck, Star Wars, and Metal Gear Solid.

Not all of them. I definitely have more obsession in my hobbies than my girlfriend does in hers.

@OCD, OP, I must say I'm a little concerned about that last line. She walked back inside without a word, so is she mad at you? Is your fascination with the truck becoming a problem with her? Before you answer, I have been there.

I lucked out, mine is obsessed with her motorcycle racing.

 

The true obsessions are always my truck or dirt bikes. I do get side tracked and won't even give a crap about my truck for a while but then I come back and obsess about it. Sometimes I wish I could just be happy with the damn thing and live life but my brain says "hell no Im going to keep you up at night and make you think constantly about that one piece of your truck thats not even bad". You're story is a mirror image of my life.

 

Its good to have your significant other get into a hobby. I got my wife a dirt bike so now she feels like part of the group and enjoys it. Before that she didn't understand why I spent so much money on it.

 

It does help to get the wife into your hobbies. I don't race bikes because I know I'll hurt myself. She got her racing license last month.

 

My wife walks out all the time to ask me what I'm doing now. I always tell her and she always just walks back in the house. They don't understand.

 

Oh the best is when I just talk about all the crap I did with my truck or bike and she just says that cool babe but in all reality Im just speaking gibberish to her lol.

Been teaching her to drive a stick hopefully she will fall in love with it like I did when I was young and then she will appreciate the truck even more.

Anyone have tips on letting little things go? I have a very high self esteem and could care less what people think about me but when it comes to my truck I feel like its the end of the world if it looks bad. This has been getting worse over the years, I had a beautiful perfect condition jeep tj that I beat to crap and I was happy with it. The tacoma made something click in my head and now tiny imperfections bug me and its 10 years old.

 

This is a standard affair nightly at my house. Happens with my firearm collection too. You know whats bullshit though? When she tells her me about her $150 hair dryer (which I bought for her) I listen intently to every word, and even respond to her. Double standards I say.

 

Wife use to work at a gun shop..... Here she was packing the same damn 1911 for years and here I am buying every firearm under the sun which was an obsession of mine, Now have only 2 handguns at one point I had 22. And have you guys noticed females keep the same car forever compared to men? Seems like most men trade in every few years but females don't care and keep the same car.

The wifes had her lancer since 06 and Ive had four tacomas granted one the frame rotted out.

 

I park my truck in a specific spot so I can view it from my chair, I see it for hours each day.

I get the same with swb.

 

My new one had the Predator tube steps on it when I got it. I too took them off the first day I had the truck; not only did they make my truck look low, the steps hanging off the tube reminded me of the ruffles on my mother's sofa skirt. An incongruous image, regardless of how pretty my rough and tumble manly 4WD is! Or rather, how rough and tumble it's gonna be as soon as I get those conspicuous bumper screws painted.
