I understand the conventional model and what you are saying. I just think it's interesting that some dealers have gotten away from that and have gone to a set price. The local Mitsu and Subaru dealer is like that. My wife knows the owners family well and they say they make more money and appear more honest that way. Not sure if I believe that but I know when I went to look at a Lancer years ago they had their price set in stone.

My family gets employee pricing on all Toyota/Lexus/Scion. I still have to watch the dealership antics when we go car shopping. I think only one of the Toyotas I've purchased had no shenanigans attempted by the dealer.

How do you get employee pricing at multiple dealerships?

I don't get my employee pricing by working for a dealership. ;)

Buying a used car is kind of like dating a girl who gets around. It just feels dirty...

They are crazy. At least here so cal a few dealers have like 50 plus tacomas. Granted they are all either grey white or silver. But still.

Same here. Tons of DCSB SR5 PreRunners (Texas Edition) with dealer rims and badges. No DCLBs, a few scarce 4x4s, and no other editions. Strangely, no really low end trucks either. I think the contractors snatch those up before they even arrive on the lot.

I like girls that know what they are doing...

But seriously, believe it has to do with how I was raised...my grandfather grew up very poor, he and my father built up a construction business scratch they never bought anything new, he did very well for himself. Let some other sucker take the hit, especially on vehicles...they are one of the worse things you can toss money at. The car business is such a scam.

About the only thing I buy new are dirt bikes, (usually left over last year's model) since they get so beat...I keep them for a few years, then part them out...so I don't loose too much money.

Since I've never purchased a customized built vehicle, how much negotiation is expected for the gen 3? I was thinking of building on Toyota's website and sending to three local fleet managers for their best OTD price... Does that sound right?

When dealer A is selling at a fixed price, the customer will go to dealer B and ask him to beat it. It's easy enough to beat the price, then back load the deal with bullshit fees to make up the difference, so dealer A loses out on a sale. For my most recent car purchase, I tried the dealer dance, let me talk to my manager, b.s. and then I produced a car cost report and all of sudden, the dealer was ready to play nicely. In the end, I walked out of the dealership with the salesman in hot pursuit and agreed to my terms: no $300 "admin fee", no to the $250 security VIN engraving stickers b.s., no to $75 for the security wheel lug nut gizmo and no to the PDI fee, that shaved close to $1000 in crap I didn't want to pay for.

Having said, I would gladly purchase a car at a fixed price if the price was simply listed and sales tax added, period. But in the US/Canada, the price dance is the preferred dealer method because they can screw less skilled customers out of more money.

When it comes to negotiating the purchase of the new Tacoma, I will go in with a price cost sheet and work from there. I know initial demand will be high, so I'm willing to wait. As long as my current ride is in good mechanical condition, I'm not in desperate mode that I have to buy something now. Currently in Canada, Toyota has a $2000 discount on the Tacoma for cash purchases. I'll be watching those incentives to see what they will have on the Tacoma once the initial demand is met.

Guessing there will be some decent deals in the use market, from those people ditching their rides to have the latest and greatest.

That's good info... unfortunately I don't have much time... my first little one is expected to arrive in January and my FJ with a 3" lift has already been deemed by the wife as useless for that rear door and reaching with that lift... so I need to sell the ole FJ and build a new Tacoma to my liking...

In the US, Consumer Reports sells them, I'm sure there must be others as well. In Canada, Consumer Reports also has pricing in CAD$. I went with https://carcostcanada.com/
For 1 fee, I am able to obtain prices on 10 cars for 1 year.

What happened to this thread? I'll chime in on the latest discussion.
I bought new for a few reasons:
    1. couldn't find a good used 4x4 Off road for a decent price (I like to use 4x4 even though a PR would do fine here)
    2. Toyotas hold their value very well
    3. I plan on keeping it a long time
    4. I like knowing it wasn't driven by an idiot.
    5. more
    It's paid off now!

Now when the wife and I wanted an Acura MDX I didn't want to pay close to 50K. So I searched and searched and found exactly what what we wanted for a CPO with 32k mi. It was off a 3 year lease, one owner. It had just got the 30k service plus new brakes and tires for $31k OTD (negotiated price after leaving the lot and coming back)

So you see it depends entirely on the make and model you want. I've been through this rodeo many times.
In my experience it's okay (in most cases) to buy a Honda or Toyota new because of resale vale. "Most" other brands do your diligence and buy a good used one (CPO for most) and you will save a mint. Lux vehicles for sure!!

    Hope this helps

Just a heads up that report does not include any of the dealers incentives. Dealers get anywhere between 5-10% of the value back of a vehicle back from the company after invoice in sales incentives. That's why the invoice isn't nearly as strong a tool as people think it is. I've had the invoice thrown in front of me several times and seen a higher number than our companies corporate rate, which makes me laugh.

The funny thing is that my wifes family grew up poor too. All of them made it fairly big though and now drive brand new BMW's on lease. Her grandma thinks I must have a shitty job because I drive a Toyota and bought my wife a Ford . I mean, who buys a pickup truck when Ford will lease them over two years for more money. At least that's what her grandma thinks

It's funny how people go each way. Sometimes the poor that become rich learn to be great misers like you. Other times they end up rich and flaunt there wealth in every way. One of the other grand daughters is getting married in Banff and is pissed that half the family can't afford the $2K to stay the week with her. Her Oil VP daddy called me to ask if I needed gas money. I hung up on him. We make way above average income family together and that's still not enough for her family.
