I wanted to clarify my comment because on re-reading my post it could have been taken as dismissive of your point . While you are correct that an end grain glue joint is essentially the weakest type of glue joint , I feel it is more than adequate for this application . I did not have any concerns going with my glue only approach but because I am not infallable and your comment made me curious , I mocked up another joint with the same glue and material

After allowing 2 hours drying time , I could lean on the long end of the black walnut piece with basically all my weight without movement or joint failure . Due to the fact that the little posts are glued on both ends , and that pulling on the top of the post actually puts it into compression against the handrail , I'm not concerned that the forces that a person , even an adult could apply to that piece could dislodge it .

Sorry if my original post came off kinda gruff

So happy , final trims fitted and installed , all the carpentry that's left is the newel caps and a final sanding

My next project, dresser for the misses. Most likely white HPL laminate on the drawer and walnut veneer/solids for the rest.

I always liked Mondrian. He was way ahead of the curve.

Anyway, I redesigned the dresser a little. Found some quarter sawn Mahogany I had in the shop, going to make the fronts out of that, ⅜" solid edging around them and then get the side and top in white lacquer.
The feet I'll have my buddy fab up, then powder coat in white.

There are two 7' diameter Firs in the park a 5 minute walk from my house . 4-6 footers are scattered around all over this area , they used to leave some behind as seed trees

Are you planning to do handles or cuts on the drawer tops leaving a gap for the hand to pull ?

I think the fence actually belongs to the neighbor, and they're renters. Makes it a PIA to get ahold of the actual owner to come up with an agreeable plan to repair/replace the fence. Not my lane.
