I have a wheel in mind that is all black. the outer part of the rim is chrome. I want to paint it with the metal cast in a "smoke" after prepping and painting. I would imagine that a clear coat would be the next step for durability. Krylon Tough Coat:

U think that this would hold up to road grime and everyday driving, no offroading.

One more thing, should i wait to paint the wheels till they are on the tire or before mounting. the reason i ask is when the mount a tire, sometimes they aren't very gently with the outer lip of the wheel....

    ADVICE??

I think it will hold up if you prep it good before spraying. Rims are easier to paint with the tires off but you also run the risk of the re tard at the tire shop wrecking your fresh paint while he mounts the tires while texting his gf on his i-phone its your call good luck
