I wanted to know if anyone has had experience with the racks which are just to vertical posts on the front and rear of the side, which run side to side but have no supports going from front to back. So two separate pieces of metal.

These are a bit more affordable than the heavier duty racks available.

    The kind I'm talking about:

My Taco came with something like that but it was made from 1" .120 wall square tube which is way less substantial than the 1.5-2" tube in the pic. I had a fork lift load 16 wet, rough sawn, 1"x12"x16' Ponderosa boards with with no rack issues. The truck didn't like it but I only went about 10 miles. If it seems to weak over time just weld or bolt on some extra support.

if you use it regularly definitely lay an angle iron across the top on each side and bolt it to the cross bar and the posts so if you have to hit brakes hard the load wont push it into the back of your cab.

also those racks when driving on the highway, will drop your mpg about 2-3 mpg and 4-5 mpg if you have ladders on it so keep that in mind, its worth the trouble to remove it for long highway trips if you don't need it

As long as the loads are light a heavy load will just cause things to bend forward under a panic stop

saw this sitting at a intersection one morning a car stopped the truck was to close
