    Ok so.....

Blew up my third member. Nice n chunky....

Anyways. Went to the junkyard and popped one from a 4Runner. Didn't fit.

Then ordered one online that was supposed to be from a Prerunner. Also didn't fit.

Mine is much larger, 4.1 gear ratio

    3.4 v6 2wd Prerunner non locking no ABS ...

What specifically do I need to be looking for?

Mine has 10mm bolts with 14mm heads.

    Thank you.

If anyone has one for sale let me know.

I am also selling a 3.58 gear ratio one ( that didn't fit) haha

Not sure about this but I think the VIN of the donor vehicle should provide you the kind of information you need about the axle gearing and such. Good luck.

VIN does NOT specify gear ratios, the tag in the driver door will tell you the original diff gear ratio. Also, the ratio (or gear teeth counts) is stamped on the ring gear itself.

    OP needs a diff from a non-locked first-gen TACOMA ( not a 4runner ), or an early non-locked Tundra.

Suspension, skid, exhaust, rear end, wheels n tires, and a bunch of nonsense.

    The 8.4" were too small.

My original diff had the 4.1 gear ratio.

Picture above is an 8.4 diff........the girdles on the bearing caps give it away.

What ever you tried to put in there that was too small was not an 8.4 rear diff.

    You need a 96-04 Tacoma I4 or V6 open 4.10 diff. Aka Non-TRD
Or from a 99-05 v6 Tundra rear. Should be easy to pick from pictures, only diff that has the girdles is the 8.4.

86-02 4runners use either the old 4cyl rear diff (8.0") or they use the 6cyl version (8.0")

what do you mean too small? Diff you have pictured looks like an 8.4 to me.

It's too small of a third member. It's short diameter about and inch or so.

The large sticker on the door jamb of the vehicle gives specifics on gear ratio.

    Here:

The axle code for your rig can be found on the manufacture's sticker located on the driver's side door jamb as follows:
    First digit:

    • A = 7.5" ring gear
    • B = 8" ring gear
    Next two digits:

    • 01 = 3:42
    • 02 = 3:58
    • 03 = 4:10
    • 04 = 4:56
    • 05 = 3:15
    • 06 = 3:91
    • 07 = 4.30
    Last digit:

    • A = 2 Pinion, Open
    • B = 4 Pinion, Open
    • C = 2 Pinion OEM Limited Slip
some '98-00 models have shown a BO code of "???" on the door plate; so far this turns out to be a 3.91 gear ratio, at least for the 5sp. RZN171L-CRPDKAB with factory 31s/265s should be 4.56 with the AT.
Edit by Ed Quinones on 10-7-05: I used to own a 99 Prerunner ext cab 2.7L with auto tranny and gear code of B07A. It came from the factory with a 4.56 gear ratio.
