You guys ARE ALL CORRECT :) and you have no idea how much I seriously appreciate all of your input. I don't always know the right question to ask but there are so many smart people on TW I always learn more than I expected.

I do want to keep my windows up, lock my doors, not end up in jail, and most importantly "situational awareness, vehicle placement, thinking 3 steps ahead of the bad guy, and having a plan are your best options"; before my husbands first deployment he looked into the concealed weapons law where we are now. He actually bought the Glock for us but mostly for me but as my husband would say, I'm not afraid of it I respect it .

I know I'm babbling now but God gave me a Marine and he came with a love for me, trucks, and guns (I'm not sure about the order). I am learning to love his truck and when he get home, if it's something else we can do together, I'll learn to love his guns. If he were here, situational awareness, vehicle placement, thinking 3 steps ahead of the bad guy, and having a plan sounds EXACTLY like what he would have said and to me!

    Agree 100%.

Having said that, a can of bear spray would be a nice addition to, say the lower left console cup holder...

If someone does get surprised and if the side window buys them a couple of seconds (if they can't drive away), then it might help. Of course, all it takes is a prevailing breeze, and they're a victim of their own weapon.

I always try and do this. Not just for if I have a crazy person coming at me, but also for a vehicle behind me that may not notice I am at a stop. If I am unable to move and get hit from behind, I can more than likely avoid hitting the car in front of me.

Hope my words helped a little. Stay safe, ma'am.

Try martial arts again - ever heard of Krav Maga? Learning unarmed combat won't help you in the scenario we're discussing here, but you'll find that particular skill set useful elsewhere.

Speaking of skill sets, armed combat beats unarmed combat every single day. If you live in an area where concealed handgun carry is legal, then I highly recommend that you look into it. Carrying a firearm isn't for everyone - but if you'll commit to obtaining the necesary training, you'll be a lot better off than if you were going around unarmed. Necessary training is more than just meeting the state's carry permit requirements.

Also, if you're using a pistol for home defense...talk to your husband about buying a rifle - specifically a carbine. Having 30 rounds of rifle cartridge (powerful) in a more stable/more accurate platform is much preferred to using a handgun...All handgun cartridges pale in comparison to rifle rounds. Clint Smith said it best - "a pistol is used for fighting your way to your rifle."

Pepper spray might help a little bit if you're out in the open; however, anything that you do that will slow you down from leaving the immediate area after an event happens won't help you. Pepper spray on key chain (if you're holding it while you're out)? Sure. In a vehicle - maybe as a backup in case you can't get away. But then...that role's better suited for a firearm.

Hope my comments gave you a course of action. Stay safe.

Yeah, but if the window goes, the miscreant will be right there. Grizzly spray for the win.

Just tried this and even with my aftermarket alarm it won't work. I am going to have to have the alarm guy program it to do this feature.

So. Has anyone found out if this can be done using the Techstream software. I seem to be thinking this might be a cool item to pickup if I can truly customize how things work in the vehicle. I also hate having my doors not lock automatically. I work in an area that car jackings happen a lot and this simple fix does stop a door flip from a criminal who wants to take my truck.

    Yes.

I own my own copy of the program. Lots of fun stuff to learn with the program.

Whats the alarm you have? It should be a feature of the alarm you just gotta figure out how to get to programming mode.
Is it the alarm toyota installs?

It's not a feature of the alarm, it's a feature of the door locks. The alarm, if you have one, is a different section of the TS program.

We are still talking about door locks, no?

That or go to Amazon and buy the program for $35.

I will warn you, it does take effort to install it on your own laptop. If you are computer saavy, you will enjoy the challenge.

That dose work I've seen it happen. Some people are blowhards and any counter towards their aggressive behavior makes them stop.

That said the best fight is the one you avoid through vigilance in the first place.
You have to really watch these days people tend to become Billy Badass when they drive around these days.

Had to pick some seals up from the dealership and asked about this, here is what I was told...

We hooked up a computer to my 2009 TRD Sport. The only customizable options are for the remote lock/unlock beeping, and the seat belt chime.

He explained that it is totally dependant on the ECU and not the security system. He said that it is basically a crapshoot. Some ECUs have that option available, and some don't. It isn't year or model specific, just where and when that ECU was built. If you have the ability to manually program the door locks for what you want, it should be in your owners manual

This came from the only tech I will deal with at the dealership, because he has been right everytime I get his help, and doesn't give me the run around like the other techs.

It's only been a week but I wanted to thank you guys again because your advice is working :). I am much more aware of what goes on around me now (I actually look ). I try not to let meself get boxed in at lights by moving over to either the right lane of the left lane. I never get any closer than being able to see the back tires of the car in front of me. I have my little mace gun in my truck console all the time now :).

I still have a ways to go on thinking ahead of bad people and I'm not sure I always have a good plan if something were to happen but I am thinking about it :). Have a wonderful 4th of July and be safe!

This is strange...I'm 99% sure mine locks when I hit about 11 mph. I know for a fact that if I hit the unlock button on the fob and then don't open a door within 30 seconds it relocks all the doors. That part can be kind of annoying. Now I need to check this out...

I stand corrected. I've been driving this thing for a year now and never noticed it doesn't lock when driving. Wow. Yet another thing every car I've ever owned has had and the Tacoma doesn't. Jeez. My wife's $20k Jeep Liberty has auto locks AND and temp/compass. For $12k more, apparently you don't need that kind of thing. I wonder what else I haven't noticed?
