on another note, I was driving back from the lake yesterday and saw smoke everywhere pulled over and red fluid everywhere, had to drive it two miles home because it was hot out and we had the dogs with us but pretty sure its atf from the transmission. I cant find where its coming from yet but i'll find it and send it to toyota. Hope I didnt damage the tranny

I just spent some time under the hood and cant find any loose lines, but thats also what I suspect, ill have to look closer. I have a feeling the mechanic I took it too might have bumped a hose or something, this is what I get for getting my first alignment in months

 

Here's one for you long travelers.

I'd like to upgrade the inners to heims, but retain the outer tie rods OE style in order to keep the weak point at the outer tie rods and not the rack itself.

My question, has anyone done half tie rod, half heim style connections for the steering rack before? Pretty easy to do or build?

 

What's the point ?

 

I have DTLT headers and the driver is hitting the coil bucket itself under torque. I need to find out if my frame is collapsing or if the motor mounts is done because on the passenger side I have plenty of room. I have the TC coil bucket gussets ready to go in so I need to address the clearance issue before burning them on.

The Camburg upgraded steering keeps the stock outer tie rods. It uses a clevis and heim on the rack side.

 

Ok good to knkw. I'm planning on TC gussets for the coil bucket, an over engine crossbrace to the secondary shock towers and probably solid mounted motor mounts. Or at least beefier motor mounts like from LSK

 

The point is to keep the tie rods the weak point still so I dont jack up the rack.

I do know about that one but had no idea that it keeps the outer tie rods! Do you or anybody else have a picture of that upgrade fully assembled out of curiosity?

 

Alright guys, since I have my radiator out and the front of my motor off I figure I can get to my motor mounts better and should gusset them. What gusset kit would you go with? DMZ or Solo Motorsports? I'm a 2006, not sure if my motor mounts are part of the weak ones or not but I figure I should do it.

 

I think they are. I don't think Toyota beefed the motor mounts until 07

 

I'll snap one in the afternoon if you'd like. It won't do much though because I have boots over the heims so it looks very close to stock.

It came with the Camburg kit. When I bought it the kit I chose to get the steering upgrade, but they do sell the clevis by itself though.

The link says Tundra but I guess it's the same one? I found it on their Tacoma catalog and when I opened it, it took me to the Tundra catalog.
