Im active army. About to PCS to Hawaii.

    I have a lifted 2015 Tacoma.
I need a few questions answered..

    1. Do I have to register my truck there? Or can I keep my current since I'm active duty military

    2. Do I have to get a Hawaii dL?

    3. What's the deal with a "recon" permit? Do I need one?

Can we run off road light? Strobes?

    And last question, off topic...
Is it possible to get a CCW there? I have one now. It's gonna suck to not be able to carry my gun in my truck

1 - You eventually do have to get it registered.

    2 - Not sure

3 - You will need a recon permit to get safety'd and to show a cop if you get pulled over

Off road lights and strobes basically have the same laws as most other states. They need to be covered. I'm pretty sure strobes are illegal here on road, but why would you be using a strobe light while driving anyway. Check out the Hawaii recon Q & A thread.

Not sure about the CCW. Try asking that in the Oahu thread.

hawaii doesnt have a CCW. you can not carry our gun anywhere you have to register your guns when you come to hawaii. you need a pistol license for pistols

you are legally only allowed to carry your gun to and from a gun range or gun store.

    the registration

you can either get out of state permit if you plan on keeping your original state licenses or switch over to hawaii registration.

    1. Don't believe you HAVE to get it registered but it would be easier than renewing your current registration through the mail. Also since you are mil, there is an out of state affidavit that you can grab from your orderly room that drop the registration fee to around $20.

    2. State laws very but for most, your current DL is valid until 30 days after you separate. My California DL expired in 2004 and I haven't renewed yet, don't need to.

    3. Never had to get recon.

    4. CCW. Hawaii gun laws/purchase process suck. You can apply for a CCW permit but everyone jokes about it because you WILL get denied. When you turn in the paper work/apply, cops at the window laugh and say, you will get your denial letter in two weeks. Not sure your job but unless your an MP with LEO credentials you are going to be SOL.

you will probably still have to pass recon(if your truck is modded) to pass safety to keep your vehicle permit for an out-of-state registration...even if you switch to Hi plates, you pay peanuts compared to everyone else.

and yeah...guns here is a joke compared to just about everywhere else. You can apply for the permit, but nobody has ever succeeded. Even MP's can't carry off-duty.

Also to clarify, you may be right. While I hope they do, I don't know for a fact if the Dept of the Army issues their MPs LEO credentials or not. Same with the Navy/Marine Corps. Only know we can get them in the Air Force.

Sorry to slightly derail your thread.

I don't think that would fly here...but it does look like a way to carry in other states.

almost better off leaving them at home or going through the registration process.

if only open carry was an option here :(

LEOSA is a federal law and is valid in every state, even Hawaii.

Above just states that any state laws giving individuals/entities the right to restrict firearms from their private property is valid and LEOSA does not trump them. Same goes for any state laws restricting firearms from state property. The majority of the stores on Oahu have no policy and if I carried, I wouldn't onto any state property. Also just because it is in the state doesn't make it state property.

The only potential hiccup is that Hawaii has written that they only consider you a LEO if you are on official duty. So no armed trips to the mall, store, movies, etc. A few legal folks that I know say this is a clear violation of LEOSA. I wouldn't want to be the first one but if you get arrested legally carrying under LEOSA, sounds like a good chance to win a lawsuit against the police department.

Don't take anything I say as legal advice. If you are going to carry under LEOSA talk to a lawyer first, be prepared for a headache, have a grand jury kit ready and above all, remember concealed is concealed. If you are printing even a little, I would consider a different firearm or a change of clothes.

First off, congratulations on your orders to Hawai'i Soldier. Thank you for your service and I hope you enjoy your stay in the islands. Alright, #1- as previously mentioned, you can keep your vehicle registered in whichever state you currently have it registered with but you must still acquire a safety check. This brings us to #3- recon sucks but if your vehicle's suspension is modified, you must obtain a recon in order to get a safety check. Keep in mind that you will also need a current alignment prior to your inspection. See the recon thread for full details. #2- you can legally drive in Hawaii with an out of state license as long as it isn't expired. Also, with being on active duty and depending on which state you carry a license through you may fall under the auto-extend policy. #4- all that has been mentioned is good gouge except that you may also carry your weapons to and from hunting trips. As long I've owned weapons here in Hawaii, I have never had any problems with the law enforcement while carrying my weapons. However, the permit and licensing process is a pain in the ass. Well, I hope that this helped and we hope to see your Taco out here in the Aloha State. Aloha!

BTW, check out this link for help with your vehicles/license:
