I have a 2002 Taco with 118,000+ miles. 4 Cyl, 4WD. Love this truck. A recall replaced the whole frame a few tears ago so like new underneath. Lately I have been having a problem with the horn going off on its own. Usually just after I start the truck. Dealer told me I need a wire harness changed? So I did. Approx. $500 installed. The problem has persisted and the only way to stop the horn is to remove the circuit breaker for the horn, which is also for the hazard lights. The dealer now tells me the contacts for the horn on the steering wheel are worn and will need to replace the steering wheel. Approx. $1,000 plus labor. Does anyone feel it is worth the fix or should I get a new one. Thanks for any feedback.

First off, don't go back to that dealer. They don't know how to diagnose, and just want to make money off their new 'golden goose'.

Second, try replacing the horn relay. Cheap and easy thing to try. That would be my best guess of the culprit. I haven't had to replace this relay, myself, but I think it is in the neighborhood of the inside fuse panel, near the drivers knee.

That dealer never took apart a steering wheel. There are no parts to wear out. A few little springs at most. The horn contacts behind the air bag are very robust.
