    Hey all.

I don't want to remove the entire bumper assembly, just the rear metal cover, so that I can paint it. How does one go about doing that? I don't have a rear receiver hitch, so I'm hoping it's pretty straightforward.

    Thanks.

I have a 2006 Tacoma and did the job last year. Depending on the year and rust factor, be prepared to break a few bolts and strip a few too. You must start by removing top rubber layers on bumper which will expose bolts. In addition you will find 8 bolts underneath bumper which will need to be removed. When the metal cover has been released from all necessary hardware, the bumper can be pulled straight out and down and will be released from bumper frame. If you plan on painting the matt black, might suggest going the por 15 route prior to painting. Por 15 typically does not take well to paints but since it is a bumper with a flat finish, applying paint in this situation seems to be effective.

Thanks. Looks like I'm busting out some rust penetrant, and spending some time on my back. I assume popping off the plastic pieces requires some pliers to move the clips enough. POR15 sounds like a good idea too. It will be black, so it shouldn't be too distracting.

Only broke 2 bolts. Thanks for the help. Now to sand and prime and paint. At least I get to do something fun. :D
