    Tis a sad day TW

Sunday I wrecked my baby. I won't bore you with the details but I tagged a Fiat pretty good (to the tune of a $7400 body shop estimate  )

I'm trying to decide what to do with my truck. I want to hang onto her but this will most definitely total her if I file an insurance claim. I'm waiting to hear from the other guy to fully decide but am considering my options.

If it gets totalled and I buy it back with a salvage title, is my frame rust warranty still honored? I haven't been able to find another case where the truck got entered into the program clean and then ended up a salvage title before getting the frame replaced. Mine was inspected in 2011 and good until 2019. Can anyone give me an answer before I jump through all Toyota corporate's hoops to get one?

only Toyota can answer that one for sure, what they say is what matters and no one elses opinion about it counts.

If ownership never changes then it won't be a salvage title. Toyota won't know any different if you keep it.

If your frame is good, don't worry about the warranty. I would say if you do get a salvage title, no warranty. But you may not get a salvage title, may depend on your state's laws.

I heard back from Toyota (they were surprisingly fast and helpful). The warranty is honored regardless of having had an accident with frame damage, but if it has a salvage title the warranty is no longer honored.

well you should be able to work out a damage claim and not have to do the salvage title since your keeping it.

you never did "bore us with the details" but they are important to give you advice on how to proceed because frame damage isn't easy to "see" most of the time.

so what condition is it in?

It's up to insurance at this point. As I said, one estimate from a body shop came back at $7400 and it's currently at another one right now. I'm guessing that's about what it would be worth, so I assume it will get totaled. Obviously I am hoping they will decide to fix her but it really doesn't seem economically viable. I don't think I will buy it back if it does get totaled, mostly due to some sketchy frame repair work done on it from a previous adventure of mine (see build thread if you're interested in what happened) that I was counting on a frame replacement taking care of. So it appears she's gonna get taken from me :pout:

I hate seeing another 1st gen taken off of the road, even if it is a 5 lugger! If they total it is it time for a 4x4?

BTW, I will be passing through your neck of the woods tomorrow...that is if your are still up in Rapid.

Indeed, probably won't be a Tacoma this time though (damn resale value!). I currently live in Nevada actually but will be back up to Rapid for one more year of school come August.

A branded title be it fire, flood, accident total, storm or hail damage any peril in which the vehicle is determined to be a total loss mitigates any warranty in force at the time of loss.

One thing to consider too is maybe the frame would never get replaced. It could outlast and never get bad enough to fall under the replacement. If you do buy it back make sure to take care of it with treatments of your choosing. My frame still has just surface rust and looks good cause of the initial care (if you want to call it that, sprayed used oil inside and out of frame and under body/bed) from the first year
