I am kind of a tech junkie and I can't seem to leave things well enough alone. I while back I was given a double din Chinese head unit and while I loved the features I hated the quality and reliability. I then put in a Kenwood double din and while I loved the quality I found the closed system frustrating for someone that likes to tinker. While searching online one day I found an Android Double Din made to fit the Rav4 and I really liked the way it looked, the size of it and the plug and play so I decided to take a little leap and order it.

    Link to head unit: http://www.dhgate.com/product/1024-...-4-2-two-din/215244497.html#s1-9-1|1170170226

Installing: This is where it worked good and bad. It literally connected to the existing harness and I was able to use the camera I had already installed. The steering wheel controls work perfect and I didn't have to splice any wires. The bad part is of course that this unit is slightly wider than double din standards and while it would fit perfect in some Toyotas with this style of opening it does not fit in a double din bezel. I am working on customizing one right now and it should turn out good when I am done. Temporarily I just use my metro bezel without the inside piece and it works okay.

Features: This is an android system so the sky is the limit so to speak. I am running Spotify on it and it works great. I added 32 gb of extra storage.
    • Wifi
    • USB port for internet stick
    • USB port for external storage
    • Connect to steering wheel without additional box (why doesn't Kenwood do this?)
    • Mic built in and external mic included (the quality is actually better than my Kenwood was)
    • Bluetooth audio streaming
    • Change the button light colours to match stock orange.
    • Quick launch buttons on the side of the unit.
    • Backup camera instant on even if the unit is booting
    • Customize boot logo
    • Comes with iGo navigation but you could change this to anything you want from the Play Store
    • Always connects to my phone right away, I have never had to manually connect it like I did with my Kenwood all the time.
    • Quick and responsive
    • Screen is good, could be a little better in bright light.
    Drawbacks:
    • Having to create my own bezel. A little frustrating but I knew I would.
    • Next/Back track control from steering wheel wont control Spotify (Spotify issue, not really unit).
    • A little slow to boot (25-30 second)
Sound Quality: This is where I am not well educated, while it sounds really great to me with the stock speakers perhaps someone with a better ear for sound quality would be able to tell the difference. I would say it sounds as good as my Kenwood did but like I said, you may disagree.

I will keep this tread updated as I continue my install. Video to come soon.IMAG0567.jpg IMAG0569.jpg

Thanks, any idea if this would work with the JBL system?

Hmm, that I am not sure. Is the wire harness different on the JBL system? Here is what the harness looks like for it. android-4-4-2-two-din-receiver-car-dvd-player.jpg

Looking at it there is an AMP control wire, could you use this with the JBL system?

I'm not exactly sure what the back of mine looks like and what wires it has

OP do you have a background in software? I'm curious as to how open this system is software-wise. For example, can you load Android APKs from a memory card?

I am a web designer by trade but I like to tinker in my spare time. The Android OS is not rooted and to be honest I haven't even tried to root it yet because I havn't had a need to but I might when I am done the install. But in android you can install third party APK's as long as you have the settings set to allow you too (as far as I know). The only thing I would be weary of is loosing the custom APK's the developer made for the unit. There is an APK pack included which would likely allow you to re-install these but like I said so far I have yet to find a need to.

This is awesome.... Have you played around with it with an Apple device at all? Curious how it is with Apple IOS.

Not yet but I can with my wifes iPhone later tonight. I don't see why there would be any issues.

That would be awesome, but dont go out of your way. I'm just curious... Hows the trim coming on that thing? Could you just cut a normal double din wider? or is it way off?

It is coming along well. I just took my spare metro kit and cut it slightly wider and I am adding some sides to the inside with some plastic. I am just working on the structure today and once I am happy with it I will paint it. This is just my 'test' bezel and once I am happy with it I might make another one to correct any mistakes from the original.

IMAG0574.jpg Here it is with the test bezel in place. Still have some sanding, bondo and painting to do but overall not too bad. I am going to round off the corners to match the head unit.

Eventually I would love to 3d print this but I would need to either 3d scan the original or design it from scratch.

I just tried it with my wifes iPhones 5S and the bluetooth voice and audio worked great. It downloaded the phone book without any issues. Apparently you can use airplay with it as well although I didn't try that function out.
