What year did they change the 4.0 MPG and HP?

I am looking to buy a Tacoma DCSB and have noticed the estimated mpg is different on some of the varioius years I'm looking at. What changed and what year did it?

The 4.0 Auto got 1 mpg better rating for highway in 2012 (21mpg hwy vs 20 mpg hwy in 2011).

I believe this was the addition of an electronic throttle and some other electronic tweaks, though I do not have all the details.

did not know that.... makes sense why i get 20mpg on the highway in my 2013.... I want to say they made the skirts on the pistons shorter (reducing "rotating mass") for the increase in mpg. But that aint enough to get 21.
