This past weekend my friend and I did some beach driving and at some point the light came on and hasn't gone out since. What exactly does the slip indicator indicate, where is it located and what is it attached to? Today I tried disconnecting the battery and the light is still on so I'll need to get a scan gauge next. Any thoughts?

Chech your wheel speed sensors probably knocked a wire off in the sand.

Thanks for the quick response. Would a scan gauge be able to read the codes I need? Where are the wheel speed sensor wire located?

Sensors are located at each wheel and tell PCM if one or more wheel is turning a different speed [spinning or sliding] the wire's connect at the wheel

Poop. So is there a scanner I can purchase at a reasonable cost that could read this code? I'll crawl around tomorrow and look at the wires to see if that's it.

If it's under warranty I'd take it to toyota have em check it out for free and don't tell them about off roading it just say it came on you don't know why

I'm over 30k miles so I'm not sure it's still under warranty. Regardless, I'll find great satisfaction in fixing the problem myself. :)

I bought a little ABS scan tool and it's giving me c1290 as a code. Does this make sense? The code I found online reads the c1290 code as a steering angle sensor zero point malfunction.

Yes, it makes sense. Sounds like the infamous spiral cable.

Basically, the steering angle is needed in order for the skid control ecu to calculate how much sideways acceleration is appropriate at that moment, along with some other data, like speed.

I wonder though... "zero point" malfunction? Sounds like the zero point is out of whack. Does your steering wheel point straight when you drive straight? If no, you need an alignment. If yes, sounds like spiral cable.

Yes, my steering wheel points straight when driving. I'm confused on how to perform a yaw rate and deceleration sensor zero point calibration from the PDF I downloaded. It also listed other trouble points as poor adjustment of centered position of steering wheel or poor adjustment of front wheel alignment. Any ideas of trouble shooting this?

EXACTLY! I would hate to have and pay $100 just to have a dummy light turned off. I'm just at a loss of what to do next. Stupid question, but is this a light I really need?

Well, given that the ABS light is not on, sounds like your ABS should keep working. When this light is on, it probably means that ALSD/TRAC function will also be lost, since most likely, the error code means that the whole ECU is shut down. In other words... you'll be getting stuck easier.

How would I go about restarting the ECU? Would you know where that ECU is located?

This has happened to my truck twice before. After a few days the light went away and never came back. There is no 'reset button' on the ecu, I think you just have to disconnect the battery for a few minutes.

If you figure it out let me know! Lol. I still haven't figured it out. Did you read your code? Best I can figure is I need to buy a more expensive reader that can clear the code or do it manually. Neither of which I'm particularly sure of.

And I'll try a battery disconnect again but I tried that.

Thanks guys I'll give it a try! It's a brand new truck so I'm kinda frustrated and I haven't had time to take it to the dealer.

If it's under warranty take it back. Let me know what the problem is.
