    Hey-o!

Stoked to be a part of this forum; it seems like a great community. I've been a lurker for a few months now, but thought I'd introduce myself as I'm currently in the hunt for a 2nd Gen 4x4 access cab Tacoma. I'm a big surfer so it's going to be a truck primarily for exploring and surfing along the West coast (I'm from SF) and camping along the way. I have grand plans to build a wooden shelving unit in the bed with pull out drawers and cover it all with a camper top.

Any recs, advice, experience, or input would be awesome. I'm excited!

    Cheers,
    Jeremy

Welcome! Grab an <enter adult beverage of choice> and relax. You're been lurking so we don't need to 'splain how to use the search function or how frackin' weird we are.

My advice....be very, very careful how you choose transmission and engine size. I.e. especially if you get a 4x4....if you buy the 2.7 dear gods for the love that is holy and right do NOT get an automatic

The V6 is up in the air a bit more, some folks like the gearing in the 6 speed manual. If I got a 6 I'd 50/50 go auto, but the I4 must have the manual or you'll regret it

    Thanks for welcome!

Yeah, this community has been incredibly helpful already in helping me decide exactly what I want. That's great info @Xaks; thanks - I've been leaning heavily towards manual since that's what I love to drive, so good to know. Anything else that's really pertinent that you think I should be hip to?

That's really the biggest one off the top of my head. I'm a big fan of simple, tough work trucks without frills and accessories though, so I'm biased. I like my bench seat, hand crank windows, etc and don't get much into the heavy modding scene like a lot of folks here do.

That second gen 4-by with a snarly I4 and a 5-speed will climb a tree if you can hang on right out of the gate but still get you 20+mpg on the hiway if you're kind to the petal.

    Moddin's fun, but NOT necessary.

Awesome. I'm a fan of simple, too.

What about the V6? Anything I should know in particular? Really appreciate the help and knowledge so far.

All mine have been the 2.7 I4, so I can't really say much on the 6. A few test drives and weekend rentals don't really give me enough experience with them to do much beyond talk out of my ass, so I'll let those that own them bring their much more experienced thoughts on those
