I bought a used Leer camper shell off a guy. Our trucks were practically identical. Even more of coincidence was that I was planning on having to paint it to match my truck but when I showed up the paint was a perfect match. Anyways, I got it on and all seemed good...... until it rained. It leaks a little bit up near where it meets the cab of the truck. Upon further inspection it looks like the plastic bed liner that the shell sits on is maybe preventing it from sliding all the way up and snug.

Do I need to take that plastic bed liner off for a perfect fit? Invest in a better foam seal for that part?

Good luck sorting it out. Was the cab made for First Gen Tacoma like the one in your sig, or for Second Gen Tacoma like this forum focuses on?

Take a picture for us if you can. Certainly if your attachment is solid, you could probably solve a minor leak with a new seal.

    Stop by a Leer dealer.

They don't need the whole story, just what your problem is.

If they are really good, they may fix it for you.

At least they should advise what's needed to correct the problem, and give you an estimate for them to do it, or a price on parts for DIY.

Or maybe the top is defective, hence the reason the seller was ditching it?

mine leaks a little in the same place - many do. The fix is to get the proper seal for our trucks. I just used the rubber double tube stick on type. the correct one actually has a thicker section for the part of the bed nearest the cab. Do an Amazon search for camper shell seals or truck topper seals and it should come right up.

ETA: topper looks correct for your truck. Nice find!

My dad's cap on his Tundra leaked from day one from his Leer dealer. But then again, they didnt put it on straight and it rubbed the paint off the top of his truck bed on the driver side front corner.

Took it to a different dealer and they said the seal was a common issue, and to use duct putty on the front outside corner. This fixed the problem. Didnt fix the paint eing rubbed off problem though...

Sounds like you just need some weather stripping under the cap.

I agree with what was said above about weather stripping and the fit of the canopy. Mine leaked at the corners also, even with the correct foam. I ended up putting silicone on the edge of the rail caps at the front, haven't had an issue there since. Also, check around the 3rd brake light, mine had a waterfall due to the hole being incorrectly cut.

My cap seemed to be sliding backwards. Increasing the gap between truck and cap above the rear tail lights. I loosened the 4 bolts, lifted the cap with my back while standing in the bed and moved it forward. I was able to get it very flush. Just loosen yours up and give it a try. My shell is now tucked against the black plastic of the bed above the tail lights. Leer 100xl

I'm about to buy a seal kit off Amazon to do mine - does anyone have opinions on how to deal with the lower front portion of the bed? Seems like I would need a thicker piece up front bc it's lower than the side rails.

When my Leer dealer installed mine, they put an extra layer of weather stripping on the front of the bed, no leaking problems.
