I'm planning on upgrading my tire size while also adding a little more lift and was wondering which tire would get the better gas mileage. The 285's weigh 45 lbs and the 275's weigh 50 lbs. These are the only 2 tires I'm considering and and just interested in which would get better mileage. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Not sure if this helps but i have 285s on my doublecab and I get 17mpg. Considering yours is access cab weighing slightly less I would think it would get better mpg. But also depends on gearing you may have.

Thanks, I have the stock gears but I am a 6 speed which supposedly gets worse mileage than an auto. Also have the 4x4 which adds some weight. I don't know if the size or the weight of the new tire plays more of a factor in terms of gas mileage.

I just upgraded from stock tires on 17 wheels to 285/70R17 on 17x9. My mileage did not change much. I drive mostly highway and got 20MPG on stock. I still get about 20MPG on the 285/70R17 (19,20.5,20.4). I can't say for sure what the difference between 285 and 275 will be, but I can say the difference a tire makes to mileage is statistically insignificant. You can make more difference with a small tweak in driving habits.

Note that my information comes from a highway driving, I am not sure the same works with city centric driving.

Note also I adjust my trip miles by 1.075. I got this because at 60 I am really going 64.5, some really bad math later I came up with I am actually traveling 1.075 miles for each mile the truck says I am going. Lord knows if this is correct.

    Hope this helps a little.

What about in terms of power? Which tire can I expect to feel more slugish?

I did not notice much in MPG loss, but I did notice seat-of-the-pants loss of power. I had to work the truck harder to get it going, this was noticeable just after the new tires/wheels... I got used to it quickly. I do not push the truck very hard, not sure what WOT would feel like compared to stock. based on the fact that I am getting about the same MPG and got used to the feel of power loss, I would say I changed more than my driving habits.

if I had it to do over again I would think about a tall thin tire on 18 inch wheels... not sure if this package would have made sense but 265/70R18 seems to be within .3 inches of 285/70R17 and is now wider than stock. That would produce the lift with less rolling resistance. I am not sure what impact that would have on rubbing issues but I would guess given the same lift it would rub less since it is thinner. I don't think this setup would weigh less and I think the tires would still have to be higher load rated.
